A gripping reimagining of Truman Capote's In Cold Blood and the brutal murders that inspired it November is usually quiet in Holcomb, Kansas, but in 1959, the town is shattered by the quadruple murder of the Clutter family. Suspicion falls on Nancy Clutter's boyfriend, Bobby Rupp, the last one to see them alive. New Yorker Carly Fleming, new to the small Midwestern town, is an outsider. She tutored Nancy, and (in private, at least) they were close. Carly and Bobby were the only ones who saw that Nancy was always performing, and that she was cracking under the pressure of being Holcomb's golden girl. The secret connected Carly and Bobby. Now that Bobby is an outsider, too, they're bound closer than ever. Determined to clear Bobby's name, Carly dives into the murder investigation and ends up in trouble with the local authorities. But that's nothing compared to the wrath she faces from Holcomb once the real perpetrators are caught. When her father is appointed to defend the killers of the Clutter family, the entire town labels the Flemings as traitors. Now Carly must fight for what she knows is right.

Perhaps my expectations were a bit too high, but this was just okay for me. I think some of it had to do with not liking the narrator's different voices and accents for people.

This is one I'd suggest the physical book over the audio.

TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 3y

I'm looking forward to starting this audiobook with its #RedandWhite cover. I loved In Cold Blood and this book uses that true story to deal with a few what-ifs in regards to the crime.

Eggs How fascinating ♥️⚪️♥️ 3y

My #bookspin #doublespin for July. This is a story set in Kansas at the time the Clutters were murdered. Their story was made famous by Truman Capote‘s riveting book In Cold Blood. No Saints in Kansas is about the daughter of one of the accused‘s Defense attorneys. It‘s fiction, written for a YA audience and pales in comparison to Capote‘s book. @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks That's a shame it doesn't live up to its predecessor!! 4y

I did not read “In Cold Blood” so I don‘t have anything to base this around. Capote has a bit part in the book, and I wasn‘t much of a fan. It wasn‘t really a mystery to me in the typical sense and the main character felt kind of useless to me in the way that she didn‘t have a lot of depth and the story didn‘t really flow or have a coherent pattern.

I'm loving this YA novel that is centered around the Clutter family murders that Truman Capote wrote about in his book In Cold Blood.

What I did love about this book was how many small SWK towns are named. I read most of the book before I ran across this, my hometown's solo mention. The MC enjoyed her trip to the store, so I was happy. It's fun to see the little towns I grew up traveling to for school activities in print!

BarbaraTheBibliophage I love when a book name drops somewhere I know well. The book I'm reading now just mentioned the small Tennessee town where my cousin lives. 7y
ElyssaReads @BarbaraTheBibliophage yes! It's a small detail but such a fun way to connect to the story if you're familiar with the setting. 7y
brennahawleycraig Are you still in Kansas?? I had to look up Lakin, but my grandparents are from Lewis, over by Kingsley. We go every year! 7y
ElyssaReads @brennahawleycraig I do, but now in the Kansas City area so opposite side of the state. My grandma lives near Hutchinson so we would drive through both Lewis and Kinsley on our way there growing up! 7y
brennahawleycraig @ElyssaReads nice! I have an aunt in Hutch. I'm near KC now too; I work in OP but live south of Lawrence. 7y

#NetGalley ARC: I really wanted to like this. I grew up 15 miles from the Clutter house (see my favorite part of the book in the next post). I enjoyed how the vernacular was clearly SW Kansas, but the underdeveloped characters stopped me from loving it. Also, the MC is constantly making very childish choices and is treated like a much younger child than she is. Even though she is meant to be in high school, I couldn't help but picture her as 10.

BookFreakOut Booo, I was going to rec this to my friend in Dodge who did a journalism series on them, but might have to warn her now. 7y
ElyssaReads @BookFreakOut it was a fairly quick read so probably still worth recommending to your friend if she has an interest in the story. 7y
