The Novel
The Novel | Michael Schmidt
10 posts | 20 to read
The 700-year history of the novel in English defies straightforward telling. Encompassing a range of genres, it is geographically and culturally boundless and influenced by great novelists working in other languages. Michael Schmidt, choosing as his travel companions not critics or theorists but other novelists, does full justice to its complexity.

I had no idea that Twain & Douglass met.

Liz_M My goodreads group was obsessed with this book. I loved the idea of it, but not the scope. 4y

A few things:
-This book continues to fascinate me
-The chapter on the Brontës broke my heart into a million pieces. It is hard to fathom how different literature today would be if they had lived longer.
-The more I find out about Henry James, the less I like him

BarbaraBB He must have been a horrible man, I‘ve thought so often while reading his books. 5y
vivastory @BarbaraBB I agree. He was very elitist, but he always accused others of being pretentious. And he seemed unable to find any merit in other authors who didn't share his artistic approach. I have read Daisy Miller, which I rather liked. And What Maisie Knew, which I felt dragged on a bit. There's a few other works by him I plan on reading, but I'm really soured on him as a person. 5y

Fiction addiction.

Susannah I‘ve never heard of this book, but it looks awesome—and huge! 5y
vivastory @Susannah It is both awesome & huge. It's a fascinating read though! 5y
Liz_M My goodreads group was obsessed with this book for a few years. I, being contrary, protested the overwhelming English-speaking white-maleness by not participating. It looked hugely enjoyable though. 5y
