I picked up this book of essays because I read somewhere that the nature writing was beautiful. Well I‘m finding the writing is not necessarily moving me but I am really enjoying the content of the essays. Either way, it‘s turning out to be a good purchase. 👍

Not a #bachelorette, but nature writing & essays from someone with a not-dissimilar view of the world (and our place in it) to Bjork.

Her acceptance that
"I'm a fountain of blood
In the shape of a girl"
takes us to a pathology lab to look at our internal landscape, where she sees maps, rivers and topography.

She studies gannets raising young on a cliff-edge above the sea...
"You're the bird on the brim
Hypnotized by the Whirl"
?

rockpools ..& follows a family of killer whales around the coast of a Scottish island, following the tides, avoiding stranding in the shallow bays.

And I'll take any excuse to plug this one, even if it's a tiny bit off-kilter!

Kathleen Jamie is one of the writers I'm most happy to have stumbled across this year. She writes about nature, and our place within it - killer whales, gannets, deserted island villages, museums and whalebones, pathology labs and the northern lights. It's detailed, unsentimental and beautiful (even the things that shouldn't be!) She's an amazing observer, who makes you want to look at the world a little more closely.

rockpools Thanks for the loan of this one @River_Voice - I'll give the post a couple of days to calm down after the Bank Holiday, then pop it back to you. 6y

St Margaret of Antioch, Lindt choc (not that I've ever drooled over that Lindt shop!), and a borrowed Kathleen Jamie, from the very wonderful @River_Voice . I don't usually read the same author back-to-back, but I seem to be very happy on a diet of Kathleen Jamie and E.F.Benson at the moment. (Sorry, Ali Smith - I really will read you one day) Thank you 😊

quietlycuriouskate You are very welcome! (Judging by the look on her face, Saint Margaret of Antioch has given up all hope of getting a piece of the chocolate.) 6y
