Rose's Run
Rose's Run | Dawn Dumont
11 posts | 3 read | 13 to read
Rose Okanese, a single mother with two kids, has been pushed into a corner by Rez citizens to claim some self-respect, and decides that the fastest way to do that would be for her to run the reserve's annual marathon. Though Rose hasn't run in twenty years, smokes and initially has little motivation, she announces her intention to run the race. One quality Rose doesn't lack is spontaneity which sometimes clashes with her iron will and though she has initial regrets about opening her mouth, her life begins to dictate that she must follow through. But as fate will dictate, one rather huge unforeseen outcome of her decision is that she will have to do battle with an old inadvertently conjured demon that feeds off the strength of women. She is a truly mean old spirit who can invade other women and have them do her bidding and in no time has the Rez in an uproar. As Rose discovers, the old demon has been unintentionally called forth by Rose's teen daughter, Sarah, which complicates Rose's life just a little more. The spirit woman creates a reign of fear and havoc by appearing to people on the reserve and freaking them out, all of which leads to incidents of extreme humour and plot-twisting bemusement, liberally sprinkled with some jittery acts of valour. With a cast of unusual and unfamiliar characters, Dumont interweaves a tale of motherly love, friendship, lustful longing, whtikow lore, and Rez humour and keeps the hoopla going until the race is done. At the story's vortex is Rose, a woman destined to face her fears and provide some rich laughter while doing so. Will she send the demon back to where it came from before the spirit claims her teen daughter? Will she get back together with her philandering, rock musician husband before her girls grow up? Will she sort out her best friend's winter pregnancy? But more importantly, will she get this all done before her big, face-saving race with Dahlia Ingram, a woman whom God has designed for one purpose: to run long distances at high speeds with effortless grace.

This was a fun, fast paced, funny story of a woman who takes up running, finds herself, and defeats a supernatural dream-woman ghost monster. It was one of the very first books I put on my Litsy TBR (it took a LOT of scrolling to get there!), and I'm glad #Booked2020 inspired me to pick it up!

Cinfhen Woohoo!!!! I wonder what‘s at the bottom of my Litsy TBR?!?? 🤔 3y
TheKidUpstairs @Cinfhen it's kind of a fun time capsule. A lot of the books down there I didn't even remember. But it also showed that the big book at the time was 3y
MsMelissa Nicely done! Glad you enjoyed it. 3y

Heaps of humour, a monster based on #Indigenous folklore, gender issues, great characters, and the gritty realism of contemporary life on a reserve in Saskatchewan: this novel has all kinds of good stuff going for it. I enjoyed it very much. #CanadianAuthor #NativeBooks #OwnVoices

Then both men looked at her. Rose figured they expected her to morph into Hannibal from The A-Team and start laying out a plan for them. Then they‘d start building guns out of twine and an old rubber tire, all while exchanging wisecracks.

The cover art is by Aaron Paquette, an artist, author, and also an elected city councillor in Edmonton. Eye catching, even as a tiny ebook image on my phone. #nativebooks #Indigenousauthors

There‘s a supernatural element to this novel, and there‘s comedy—and there‘s also the sad realism of life on a First Nations reserve. #ownvoices

“It‘s funny how you forget all the bad stuff you do to other people and then remember all the bad stuff that people do to you and carry it around like an ugly purse.”

batsy This immediately brings to mind Erykah Badu's song Bag Lady: "Bag lady you gone hurt your back / Dragging all them bags like that" 6y

“I hear it‘s always good to have them in pairs. So they can look out for each other.”
“If either of them knew how to hire Russian assassins, I‘d only have one child.”

TheKidUpstairs After a day of listening to my two bicker constantly, this made me LOL 😂😂😂 6y

Monty had made some noise about Jack for a boy and Cindy for a girl but Winter had already eliminated him from the baby-naming process.
“You get to choose when you can give birth to something the size of a watermelon,” she told him. He complained that it was unfair and she promised him choice of second name but only if it wasn‘t stupid, like Tiger or Maximus.

Lola 18 years ago, Jackson was my top pick for a boy. Two girls here so we never got to use it 🙃 6y
Cinfhen Hey, what's wrong with Cindy???? 😉☺️😂 6y
Lindy @Lola You could always use Jackson for an animal companion, right? 6y

Another fabulous funny book by Dawn Dumont, this one with a magical realist twist. At first the supernatural turn at the end where Dream Woman comes to possess the women of the reserve seemed abrupt, until I looked back & saw the signs all along. Above all it's a story about a mother in her mid thirties in a moving but hilarious struggle to re-invent herself after her dirtbag husband leaves her & she loses her job. #NativeReads #LitsyAtoZ #LetterR

"Rose thought about a few thousand things she could say to Sarah -- thank you for being here, thank you for listening to me, I'm sorry, I wish I was your age again because your skin looks amazing, I love you, your dad is awful, I hope I haven't screwed you up in any permanent way because all I've ever wanted is the best for you, I wish I knew how to be the kind of mother you need, please, please don't leave me...
Rose settled for 'Good coffee.' "
