Abide With Me | Elizabeth Strout

Katherine is only five-years-old. Struck dumb with grief at her mother's death, it is down to her father, the heartbroken minister Tyler Caskey, to bring his daughter out of silence she has observed in the wake of the family's tragedy. But Tyler Caskey is barely surviving himself. His cold, church-assigned home is colder still since Lauren's death, and he struggles to find the right words for his sermons; struggles to be a leader to his congregation when he himself is lost. When Katherine's schoolteacher calls to discuss his daughter's anti-social behaviour, it sparks a chain of events that begins to tear down Tyler's defences. The small-town rumour-mill has much to make of Katherine's odd behaviour, and even more to say about Tyler's relationship with his housekeeper, Connie Hatch. And in Tyler's darkest hour, a startling discovery will test his congregation's humanity - and his own will to endure the kinds of trials that sooner or later test us all. From the Orange Prize-shortlisted author of Amy & Isabelle, this is a startlingly beautiful novel about love and abandonment, faith and hypocrisy; and the peril of family secrets

Finished early this morning as we are arriving in Stockholm, day 14. From the ships library. Have to tell you sailing past lots of islands. Beautiful. The book was a good read. Feelings, relationships, religion, God . Well written and speaks to the heart of what it is to be human. @MrsMalaprop

Lcsmcat @Amiable No, but I‘ve read others by her and liked them. 1y
CarolynM I was just looking at this in the bookshop this morning. It looks interesting but I decided against it for now. I look forward to seeing your review. 1y

Another great book by Strout. I love the quietness of her books and how they centre on a small cast of characters. Her depiction of small town life is by turns touching and frustrating and very real to me.

This book follows a grieving vicar who is trying his best to support a demanding and increasingly hostile flock. He is trying to do right by everyone but at what cost to himself?

erzascarletbookgasm I‘ve been meaning to check out this author. 2y
Bambolina_81 I think Kitteridge is a great place to start 😊 2y

I've decided to go for something a little more 'literary' than my recent reads. I loved Olive Kitteridge but wasn't as partial to Lucy Barton. 6 pages in to this and she's already got my attention 😊 Strout knows how to write such beautiful prose.

It wasn't my favourite Elizabeth Strout novel, but the woman writes so beautifully it is still amazing. #allthefeels #TBRbingo
