Here it is, the shortlist for the Tournament of Books😍

I would really like to read all 18 books before the Tournament starts in March but I think I can‘t manage. So far I have read only four! I am definitely trying though. Another challenge 😅!

Who else is trying? We can discuss our thoughts of the books here. I‘d love that! Please let me know if you‘re interested!

#ToB2018 #ToB #TournamentOfBooks

mrozzz Give it a shot! Many good books here... 6y
Zelma The short list! Hooray!!!! No way can I get all 18 done. However, I may try to get to a few that have been on my TBR for awhile in order to avoid spoilers, like Pachinko and Stephen Florida. 6y
DreesReads If they had included more of the summer reads, I would consider it. But they didn‘t pick either of my 2 favorites, so I‘m pissed lol. Fever dream was good, but felt like a short first draft to me. 6y

merelybookish I'm in! I've read seven of these. I don't think I'll read all 18 but will definitely read a few more! 6y
merelybookish Just FYI, if Lincoln on the Bardo wins the 🐓, I'll be pissed. 😜 6y
JenP I‘ve read 5 and there are a few I want to read so will try to get to those 6y
Zelma @merelybookish and I think it will. I am picking Exit West as the underdog win. 6y
Cinfhen I‘ve read 7! And some I‘d like to read too...Thoughts @L_auren are you allowed to share!?! 6y
L_auren @Cinfhen Thanks for tagging me :) I‘m not allowed to share which books I‘m reading since it will give away the outcomes before me. However I read 8 prior to the announcement so I‘m happy to speak to those since I‘ve already posted in the past!! The Animators, Exit West, Pachinko were my favorites 6y
Cinfhen Exciting @L_auren 💕💕💕I liked pachinko & Exit West...not so much animators...does this list surprise you??? Did you get through the long list??? 6y
jhod I've never heard of this! I've only read the idiot, exit west and Lincoln but lots more on my tbr! 6y
BarbaraBB @L_auren @Cinfhen I loved Animators and Exit West but haven‘t read Pachinko. It is on my wishlist. What are the other 5 you read? 6y
jhod Fab thanks! 6y
L_auren @BarbaraBB fever dream, Idaho, sing unburied, goodbye vitamin and something I‘m forgetting haha 6y
BarbaraBB @L_auren Interesting! Well, 10 books to go for you! 6y
Redheadrambles @BarbaraBB ooh always in for a discussion on ToB. I have read 5 and hopefully will get to some more before March. I kind of use it as a guide for books to read during the year depending how interested I get in them from the discussions. @ClairesReads (edited) 6y
emilyhaldi @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen hmmmm fun challenge I might try to read them all since im already 8/18 - thanks in part to #botmchallenge @L_auren !! Plus Lincoln in the Bardo and ❤️Idaho❤️ 6y
L_auren @BarbaraBB ooh Manhattan Beach was the other 😬 6y
tif So many of these on my TBR list! Might try and use as many of these as possible for the book riot and POPSUGAR challenges 6y
ClairesReads @Redheadrambles @BarbaraBB I love a good chat too- I can‘t say I‘ve ever made a huge effort with this- I‘ve read 3 already and have another 2 lined up to go- would love to give it a better go this year- although I definitely won‘t get through all 18! 6y
batsy All of these are on my TBR and I really would like to read along! But I don't think I can manage since I've only read a grand total of one 😂😭 But I'll try to see how many I can fit in by March! 6y
Cinfhen I read Fever Dream, sing, Idaho, and I'm blanking on the last one 6y
Cinfhen Oh, Lucky Boy, I bailed half way, it was boring me & it was an ARC. I own another 3, which I'm definitely going to read Manhattan Beach, Goodbye Vitamin, and Lincoln...I'll try to read along with u guys... 6y
BarbaraBB @Zelma I really need to read Pachinko. So much love here for that one. I haven‘t heard much about Stephen Florida. Looking forward to what you think. 6y
BarbaraBB @AudreyMorris I miss a lot of good books too - and did read 5 or 6 of the summer reads as well! 6y
BarbaraBB @merelybookish Yay! And yes, no Lincoln please! 6y
BarbaraBB @JenP What was your favourite so far? I have to make choices of which ones I am going to read 😉 6y
BarbaraBB @Redheadrambles that‘s how I use the list mostly too. What was your favourite so far? 6y
BarbaraBB @tif I am looking for fitting prompts for my #popsugar2018 and #booked2018 as well 😀😅 6y
BarbaraBB @ClairesReads Yay! Any favorites so far? 6y
BarbaraBB @batsy Yay 🙌! You read less obvious books I guess, which gives me lots of inspiration! 6y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I have been interested in Lucky Boy. Do you think I won‘t like it either? 6y
ClairesReads @BarbaraBB huge fan of Lincoln- wasn‘t fussed on Exit West...also loved Sing Unburied Sing- they‘re both quite obvious choices though- the rooster might go for something a bit more obscure- although Underground Railroad last year so... 6y
Redheadrambles @BarbaraBB I liked Lincoln very much as well but it‘s had so many accolades I guess it is nice to cheer on something new. I quite enjoyed Stephen Florida - it‘s got some flaws but it‘s an intriguing character study. I just ordered up The Animators and White Tears from the library 6y
Cinfhen I thought it was very slow, Barbara but you might enjoy it! I wasn't really in the mood for an immigrant story at the time, so probably it was me & not the book 6y
BarbaraBB @ClairesReads I agree, the finalists last year were rather obvious. 6y
BarbaraBB @Redheadrambles i‘ll have to check out Stephen Florida. I loved The Animators! 6y
ClairesReads @BarbaraBB @Redheadrambles I‘m really keen to check out Stephen Florida tooo 6y
RidgewayGirl I struggled with Stephen Florida, but part of that was reading The Idiot at the same time. 6y
BarbaraBB @RidgewayGirl Sounds like your on track with reading the shortlist. How many did you read? 6y
RidgewayGirl I‘ve read ten so far. It‘s so much fun to join in the conversation each round so I try to read them all. 6y

The 2018 Tournament of Books Long List is online! There are so many Rooster-worthy novels from 2017 on it! Check it out at https://themorningnews.org/article/the-year-in-fiction-2017. So excited!

#ToB2018 #ToB18 #TournamentofBooks #TheRooster

Cinfhen Woo hoo👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻exciting 6y
MicheleinPhilly I‘ve only read like 4 of them. 😩 Of course I own probably another 10. I love the TOB though because it always contains books that completely missed my radar. 6y
susanw I‘ve read 11, and have at least 10 more sitting in my TBR. But I know whatever I choose to read to get ahead will not make the short list, that‘s how my luck goes! Also where the hell is Hearts Invisible Furies? How did that not make the list???? 6y
See All 24 Comments
BarbaraBB @MicheleinPhilly Me too, I mostly love the books they select. Of this list I read 9 and have 2 more on my TBR shelves. A lot seem good though! 6y
BarbaraBB @susanw I was wondering the same. Unbelievable! 6y
MicheleinPhilly @susanw I can‘t remember if it was last year or the year before, but Shelter didn‘t make the long list. Like, what??? There‘s always at least one glaring omission each year. 6y
BarbaraBB @MicheleinPhilly @susanw I kind of like that they are a bit unpredictable! 6y
Lindy I‘ve already studied the list, figuring which of the ones I haven‘t yet read will be added to or else bumped up higher on my TBR. 😊 6y
BarbaraBB @Lindy I love that they provide an Excel-sheet of the longlist. It makes things so much easier 😀😂 6y
Lindy @BarbaraBB They do it up right. 👍 6y
vivastory @britt_brooke Are you familiar with this? The award is named after Sedaris' piece "You Can't Kill the Rooster" 6y
vivastory @BarbaraBB Will you be reading the entire short list? 6y
BarbaraBB @vivastory Each year I try to, but I am not so fanatically as I am with the Man Booker shortlist. Do you? 6y
vivastory I think I'm going to try to this year. A lot of the books are on my TBR 6y
BarbaraBB @vivastory Mine too! Looking forward to the shortlist! 6y
britt_brooke @vivastory This is the first time I‘ve seen it but I just listened to that Sedaris story recently. Listening to him imitate Paul is the best! 😆 Sadly, I‘ve only read 4 books on the list so far. 6y
vivastory @britt_brooke I've also only read 4 of them. There's quite a few that are on my TBR, including the one I'm starting today-"Exit West" 6y
britt_brooke @vivastory I‘ve been curious about that one. I‘ll be watching for your review! 6y
Kristelh I‘ve only read two but I own 3 more. 6y
RidgewayGirl A personal record - I‘ve read 17, but I joined the Rooster Summer Reading tournament and so had a head start. Being a sucker for new and shiny books helped, too. Still a lot of choices to be made about what to read before the contenders are announced, though. 6y
BarbaraBB @RidgewayGirl That is impressive!! I joined too in the Summer Tournament but still I only read 9! Do you have any favourites to recommend? 6y
RidgewayGirl The Animators and The Dark Dark were both amazing. 6y
BarbaraBB @RidgewayGirl Thanks. I have a copy of The Animators but haven‘t read it yet. I‘ll check out The Dark Dark immediately! 6y
thebluestocking I‘m sooo excited for the ToB this year. It looks like a great short list. 6y
