Marilyn | Norman Mailer
11 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
'Genius' The New York Times In 1973, Norman Mailer published Marilyn, his celebrated in-depth account of the life of Marilyn Monroe, as a glossy, fully illustrated coffee-table tome. His work was immediately acclaimed - and an enduring bestseller, rumoured to have sold more copies than any of his other works except The Naked and the Dead. Yet, until now, it has never been made available in an accessible mass-market paperback edition. This is one of America's greatest writers taking on the legend of one of Hollywood's greatest stars.

Good. Hard to get into at first as it's a biography done in the style of a novel i.e fiction so somethings are emphasised for dramatic purposes. This book is good for a foundation to build your reading of Marilyn's life on but if like me you have read and studied her extensively then you can spot how the author has used myths associated with her to drive the story along. Recommend.

This is a TERRIBLE biography. It's not even that well researched, he's just read a bunch of other misogynist biographies and analysed them. It's more about what Norm thinks of her than about her!

Kaye I have a question and a comment. Are you reading this as a required book for something ? I‘ve seen at least twice when you‘ve posted how much you dislike it, so I was wondering if you have to read it, or are one who finishes every book, no matter what ? And 2, I think Norman Mailer had a running feud with Truman Capote many years ago. They both had huge egos that got in the way. Especially after In Cold Blood, then Mailer wrote Executioners Song 6y
ladyonequestion @Kaye Not required, I am a bit of a stubborn reader who doesn't tend to bail, but I think this book might push me! That's really interesting, I'll have to read more about it. This is the first Norman Mailer book I've read, and I've only read Guys and Dolls. I didn't know much about Mailer going in, I just saw the book in my audiobook app. 6y
ladyonequestion @Kaye sorry, got mixed up between Capote and Runyon 😁. I don't think I've read any Capote, but I have heard more about him than Mailer. 6y

So far your biography is giving me hives Norm. Don't know if it's the narration on this #audiobook but so far this is hyperbolic, over-written, deeply patronising and objectifies its subject badly.

lyradora None of which is surprising. 😕 6y
MelAnn Well, remember it was written in 1973! This was pretty normal for that time period - only thing about this book to me was to make me grateful that times have changed (though some in older generations have not). 6y
ladyonequestion @MelAnn Fair point, and it's probably going to prompt me to read something better afterwards! Just shocked at how much things have changed. 6y

New #audiobook with unintentionally hilarious narration. Jeff reads like he's sitting on a throne dressed (badly) as Marilyn #shouldhavegotawoman

Mehso-so

Felt Mailer focused too much on Marilyn's body and sex life and seemed a tad sexist . . . My opinion only
