Body Kindness
Body Kindness: Transform Your Health from the Inside Out--and Never Say Diet Again | Rebecca Scritchfield
7 posts | 4 read | 16 to read
Imagine a graph with two lines. One indicates happiness, the other tracks how you feel about your body. If youre like millions of people, the lines do not intersect. But what if they did? This practical, inspirational, and visually lively book shows you how to create a healthier and happier life by treating yourself with compassion rather than shame. It shows the way to a sense of well-being attained by understanding how to love, connect, and care for yourselfand that includes your mind as well as your body. Body Kindness is based on four principles. WHAT YOU DO: the choices you make about food, exercise, sleep, and more HOW YOU FEEL: befriending your emotions and standing up to the unhelpful voice in your head WHO YOU ARE: goal-setting based on your personal values WHERE YOU BELONG: body-loving support from people and communities that help you create a meaningful life With mind and body exercises to keep your energy spiraling up and prompts to help you identify what YOU really want and care about, Body Kindness helps you let go of things you can't control and embrace the things you can by finding the workable, daily steps that fit you best. Think of it as the anti-diet book that leads to a more joyful and meaningful life!

I know y‘all will understand. I took today off and had planned a quiet day of reading - my step kids were supposed to go back to their Mom‘s yesterday & the hubby was supposed to work. Thanks to a snow storm, neither of those things happened. I love my people, but a little bummed I didn‘t get my quiet day of reading. At least the hubby picked a good movie.

NovelGirl82 Ugh, I‘m sorry. I felt bad for being happy that my husband told me this morning that he was going to go see my sis-in-law and nephew on his next few days off without me. Sometimes we need that alone time! 3y

A resource to help you determine what‘s important to you and encourage you to make a manageable step by step plan to achieve your goals. It‘s mostly a psychological pep talk, which isn‘t necessarily a bad thing, though it‘s not an approach that works for everyone. The basic message comes down to love yourself, and do things that are good for you and make you happy.

With Thanksgiving tomorrow (here in the US), remember to enjoy the day, enjoy the people, & enjoy the food. 🦃

I truly wanted to give this book a giant thumbs up and call it my favorite recent wellness book. But the whole middle section didn't work for me. The author is a dietician but give lots of psychological advice, which seems outside her scope of practice. Lots of "just be positive," which is dismissive.

However, the food, movement, and body positivity messages are outstanding.

BkClubCare Why is "be positive" dismissive? 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @BkClubCare I don't mean that positivity is bad, but that there's so much more to health and wellness. It's complex layers of difficulty and healing, so I think it's dismissive to focus so strongly on just one layer. It doesn't acknowledge the whole story. 7y
BkClubCare Ok. Grant you that. I get it. Namaste 7y

mllemay This needs to be on billboards, seriously!! 7y
JoRead Absolutely! I'm always telling ppl that it doesn't have to hurt to prove it's doing any good to your body. 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @mllemay I'd support the billboard idea! 👏🏻👏🏻 7y

This idea will work for some of us, but not for others. But what I like so far is the suggestions for lots of small steps to start taking step by step. #bodykindness

LauraBrook Hmmm. Have been thinking a lot about body kindness the last couple of days, so this is timely. May have to pick this one up! 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @LauraBrook I like it so far but I'm only about 25-30% through. 7y

Starting this one from my NetGalley shelf since it releases today. It's an anti-diet, self-love style book. Perfect for the work I do, and also my own 2017 goals! 😍

Amandajoy I just listened to a podcast with the author. I'll be interested in your review, I'm always looking for books that will help me become a better nutrition educator. 7y
