Lost at Sea
Lost at Sea: The Jon Ronson Mysteries | Jon Ronson
The New York Timesbestselling author of The Psychopath Test, Jon Ronson writes about the dark, uncanny sides of humanity with clarity and humor. Lost at Sea reveals how deep our collective craziness lies, even in the most mundane circumstances.Ronson investigates the strange things were willing to believe in, from lifelike robots programmed with our loved ones personalities to indigo children to hypersuccessful spiritual healers to the Insane Clown Posses juggalo fans. He looks at ordinary lives that take on extraordinary perspectives, for instance a pop singer whose lifes greatest passion is the coming alien invasion, and the scientist designated to greet those aliens when they arrive. Ronson throws himself into the storiesin a tour de force piece, he splits himself into multiple Ronsons (Happy, Paul, and Titch, among others) to get to the bottom of credit card companies predatory tactics and the murky, fabulously wealthy companies behind those tactics. Amateur nuclear physicists, assisted-suicide practitioners, the town of North Pole, Alaskas Christmas-induced high school mass-murder plot: Ronson explores all these tales with a sense of higher purpose and universality, and suddenly, mid-read, they are stories not about the fringe of society or about people far removed from our own experience, but about all of us.Incisive and hilarious, poignant and maddening, revealing and disturbingRonson writes about our modern world, the foibles of contemporary culture, and the chaos that lies at the edge of our daily lives.

10/23 this is a collection of articles Ronson wrote for the Guardian. And although I didn‘t enjoy it as much as his full length books overall, some of the articles were fantastic. Poignant, funny, sad, uncomfortable, honest, true Ronson. I just wish that some of the articles (Kubrick, Disney cruise, real life super hero to name a few) could have been longer. 3.5 ⭐️

Ronson writes such interestingly odd books & this collection of characters he‘s interviewed over the years gives a great taste of his storytelling. Whether he is following a religious group that wants to donate their kidneys, an ex-cult leader that is now big in the business world teaching influencing others, looking through Stanley Kubrick‘s estate, or interviewing Margaret Keane about the theft of her artwork….each personality is one-of-a-kind.

So we've been in our home three years and the "library" (which has basically been a mud/dog/office room) finally got some shelves and a couch to read on. Husband is currently working on the built-ins for the two perpendicular walls. Can't wait to unbox some books! The dogs, however, are unimpressed with the invasion of their space!

Truly one of the most memorably unusual books I've read. Proof that #peoplearestrange & in Ronson's hands they make for a great read!

In 2000, documentary filmmaker, Errol Morris, had a tv series called "First Person." Each episode featured a unique subject (they were unique due to either a certain belief, occupation, or experience). Ronson's book is the literary equivalent of "First Person." This book is undeniably weird & strange (the piece about a planned mass school shooting at the North Pole is probably more surreal than any other nonfiction I have read). ?

vivastory Yet, I found Ronson to not be exploitative or trafficking in the weird for cheap thrills. He was honest with his subjects while also trying to maintain objectivity. I will definitely be reading more of his work. 7y
Sweettartlaura Have you read Them by Ronson yet? He handles these subjects similarly, I feel. 7y
vivastory @Sweettartlaura I just requested it from the library. Lost at Sea was my first Ronson 7y
Books_Wine_Repeat This was my first Ronson--I liked his writing style. Adding your suggestion to my list. 7y
vivastory @Books_Wine_Repeat I really enjoyed it. I'm going to read "Psychopath Test" after "Them." I believe he also wrote a piece about trump campaign that is available as a Vintage short on Kindle 7y

Mehso-so

This book is a collection of previously published stories, some of which are funny, and some merely odd. If you need a brainless book about random weird shit, this might be for you.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I liked his Shamed book, so I'll probably check it out. 8y
JSW @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I really enjoyed his book about Psychopaths. 8y

"Ronson delivers again, whether he's hanging out with religious extremists, people who think they are aliens or psychic or both, or Insane Clown Posse. Always poignant, mostly hilarious." --Joe
