The Memory of Old Jack
The Memory of Old Jack | Wendell Berry
6 posts | 4 read
In a rural Kentucky river town, "Old Jack" Beechum, a retired farmer, sees his life again through the sades of one burnished day in September 1952. Bringing the earthiness of America's past to mind, The Memory of Old Jack conveys the truth and integrity of the land and the people who live from it. Through the eyes of one man can be seen the values Americans strive to recapture as we arrive at the next century. "Few novelists treat both their characters and their readers with the kind of respect that Wendell Berry displays in this deeply moving account . . . The Memory of Old Jack is a slab of rich Americana." The New York Times Book Review

1. November makes me think of the Kentucky book fair, & a main reason I heard about it & started going was to meet Wendell Berry. Tagged book is the first of his books I read, but it‘s not signed. I have a few others that are signed, plus I have met & read books by many other authors due to the book fair.
2. I have felt appreciated at work. I haven‘t always felt that at other jobs.
3. Yoga, reading

Mehso-so

I read this book because it is a favorite of a new friend with whom I have a lot in common. Had I not been determined to finish it because of said friend, I would have bailed -- not because it wasn't good, but because it just wasn't my cup of tea. However, now that I finished, I'm glad that I did. It was a beautifully written story of a time gone by, set on a Kentucky farm in the late 1800's/early 1900's. I won't revisit, but... mom2bugnbee (cont)... I'm glad I read it because it gave me a glimpse into the mind & soul of a new friend. Isn't that a wonderful thing about books? 7y

"With a sort of fierce grace, he has kept his hatred to himself, not wanting to interfere..."

"Fierce grace". I've never heard that phrase before, & I kinda love it.
