Give and Take
Give and Take: Why Helping Others Drives Our Success | Adam Grant
An innovative, groundbreaking book that will captivate readers of Malcolm Gladwell, Daniel Pink, The Power of Habit, and Quiet For generations, we have focused on the individual drivers of success: passion, hard work, talent, and luck. But today, success is increasingly dependent on how we interact with others. It turns out that at work, most people operate as either takers, matchers, or givers. Whereas takers strive to get as much as possible from others and matchers aim to trade evenly, givers are the rare breed of people who contribute to others without expecting anything in return. Using his own pioneering research as Wharton's youngest tenured professor, Grant (author of Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World) shows that these styles have a surprising impact on success. Although some givers get exploited and burn out, the rest achieve extraordinary results across a wide range of industries. Combining cutting-edge evidence with captivating stories, this landmark book shows how one of America's best networkers developed his connections, why the creative genius behind one of the most popular shows in television history toiled for years in anonymity, how a basketball executive responsible for multiple draft busts transformed his franchise into a winner, and how we could have anticipated Enron's demise four years before the company collapsed-without ever looking at a single number. Praised by bestselling authors such as Dan Pink, Tony Hsieh, Dan Ariely, Susan Cain, Dan Gilbert, Gretchen Rubin, Bob Sutton, David Allen, Robert Cialdini, and Seth Godin-as well as senior leaders from Google, McKinsey, Merck, Estee Lauder, Nike, and NASA-Give and Take highlights what effective networking, collaboration, influence, negotiation, and leadership skills have in common. This landmark book opens up an approach to success that has the power to transform not just individuals and groups, but entire organizations and communities. From the Hardcover edition.

I didn‘t like this book as much as when I read it 10ish years ago, but I do still think it has value.

Suet624 @Leftcoastzen Yeah. I just decided to blast some Linkin Park and Foo Fighters and that actually, for some strange reason, quieted them down. Probably just for a little while though. Not sure why. 1y
Leftcoastzen @Suet624 👏👏😂Good Job! 1y
Deblovestoread I was talking to my dad at Christmas about how much I need quiet after a peoply day and he said I come by it honestly. I think he‘s better at hiding it then I am. 😂. He will appreciate “Pro-Quiet” 1y

Interesting but not overly surprising information about people classified as givers, takers, or matchers. Did I miss the part about how to figure out which one I am? I feel I could be any one of the three depending on the circumstances.

I came across Adam Grant's name while reading Deep Work. He is an organizational psychologist with a couple of books out and a podcast. This book defines people as Givers, Takers, and Matchers. Listening to the audiobook while cleaning & sealing the deck. Love the concept but the constant flow of examples is getting a little tiresome. The stories are interesting, there are just so many!

The pic is after cleaning but before sealing. 🙌

Since my kindle battery died, even though I thought I had as charging it, I will return to Give and Take for my evening reading. I do like this book, but I get so aggravated when I read about the Takers.

Leniverse What a great bookmark! 😍 6y
Tjackson @Leniverse Thanks! Got it Frida Kahlo‘s House/ Museum in Coyoacan, Mexico. 6y

My travel goals and work responsibilities have affected my reading goals this month, but I am determined to get back on track this weekend. BTW, don‘t even ask about the exercise goals - they are in bad shape😀

Happy Weekend!

This is a great chapter!!!! I think people often underestimate others and can‘t see potential. I see this a lot of educators underestimate potential in children.

Givers, by default, see the potential in others!!!! I want to work for a giver!!!!

Spotting and cultivating talent is so important. I don‘t understand why so many people prefer to be competitive and refuse to work together to bring others up. Why are people so threatened by other people being successful- can‘t we all be successful? Be a giver!!!!

Finally, I am curling up with a book! Household chores are nearly done. Sore legs have recovered from yesterday‘s March For Our Lives (7.5 Miles of walking) and 4 hours standing.... now time to break in reading glasses and try to finish reading this book.

Although schools are closed today because of snow, I have to go to work because twelve-month employees are two hours delayed. This gives me some morning reading time and this is the book I‘m trying to get through. I‘m reading five different books right now and each day I read a different one.

Bklover Two hours delayed?!?! What nonsense. You should be at home drinking cocoa in your jammies. (I was a 12 month school employee as well. Recently retired early. Fortunately snow days for students meant snow days for us too. Was always a nice free day!) 6y

This morning I‘m finding myself very indecisive. I can‘t decide if I should read Give and Take or Italian Ways. I‘m in the middle of both of them and I really want to finish them both, but I don‘t have enough time today to finish either of them. I‘ll probably end up reading a little of both and not making significant progress in either.

I had a weekend reading plan, but I got distracted by this lovely book on my shelf. I heard Adam Grant speak 2 years ago, got him to autograph his book, but never read it. Now, I am reading it with the other 6 unfinished books I am reading. Food for thought: are you a giver or a taker or a matcher?

This book gives a great perspective on, you guessed it, giving and taking. I've always had an issue with giving too much and being too stubborn to take anything in return, but of course giving too much isn't healthy anyways. If you think you have an issue with either side, I totally recommend this.

Love Adam Grant almost as much as Malcolm Gladwell. New life goal: raise my children to be Givers. @Orbeck33 and @todd you two are definitely givers. 😀

jeff How did you like Originals? (Recently picked this up on a bookstore visit and recalled you had posted a quote.) 8y
iwitzman Liked it a lot! 8y
