Pox: Genius, Madness, And The Mysteries Of Syphilis | Deborah Hayden
1 post | 1 read | 11 to read
From Beethoven to Oscar Wilde, from Van Gogh to Hitler, Deborah Hayden throws new light on the effects of syphilis on the lives and works of seminal figures from the fifteenth to the twentieth centuries.Writing with remarkable insight and narrative flair, Hayden argues that biographers and historians have vastly underestimated the influence of what Thomas Mann called "this exhilarating yet wasting disease." Shrouded in secrecy, syphilis was accompanied by wild euphoria and suicidal depression, megalomania and paranoia, profoundly affecting sufferers' worldview, their sexual behavior, and their art. Deeply informed and courageously argued, Pox has been heralded as a major contribution to our understanding of genius, madness, and creativity.

#OneWordTitles and a fun read about syphilis (bet that's not a phrase you've heard very often 😉). #PhotoADayNov16 #NonfictionNovember

Zelma 😂 and yet, a phrase I am not surprised you are posting. You do find the oddest, coolest nonfiction books. 7y

EvieBee Haha! Sounds fascinating! 7y
saresmoore Ahahaha! This is pretty much the last thing I would want to read, but I love that someone wrote it! 7y
Hobbinol 😂I stacked this because I'd love to give my special someone the Pox for the holidays! Your medical collection is just revelatory! I love it! (Fascinating topic though really. My partner used to teach a course on creativity. I think he might enjoy it... And then I can read it when he's done.. after I finish all these other books lying around...)🙂 7y
LeahBergen @Zelma 😂Thank you! 7y
LeahBergen @Hooked_on_books Doesn't everyone? 😂 7y
LeahBergen @EvieBee84 It really is! 7y
LeahBergen @Hobbinol We should all give our partners the Pox for the holidays! 😂 I did a class on the psychology of creativity in university and loved it. The author may stretch the syphilitic connection a bit for some of the famous people in this book but damn me! if it still isn't super interesting. 7y
DebinHawaii This does make me want to start a list on Goodreads or Amazon titled "Fun Books About Syphilis" just for the heck of it! ? 7y
LeahBergen @DebinHawaii Yes!! 😂😂 7y
Hobbinol I really did give this book to my partner and he's really enjoying it. Just thought I'd follow up. Thanks so much for posting. 7y
LeahBergen @Hobbinol Oh, I am SO glad that you really did give your partner the Pox for Xmas! 👏🏻👏🏻😂 7y
