The Upside of Stress
The Upside of Stress: Why Stress Is Good for You, and How to Get Good at It | Kelly McGonigal
Drawing from groundbreaking research, psychologist and award-winning teacher Kelly McGonigal, PhD, offers a surprising new view of stress--one that reveals the upside of stress, and shows us exactly how to capitalize on its benefits. You hear it all the time: stress causes heart disease; stress causes insomnia; stress is bad for you! But what if changing how you think about stress could make you happier, healthier, and better able to reach your goals? Combining exciting new research on resilience and mindset, Kelly McGonigal, PhD, proves that undergoing stress is not bad for you; it is undergoing stress while believing that stress is bad for you that makes it harmful. In fact, stress has many benefits, from giving us greater focus and energy, to strengthening our personal relationships. McGonigal shows readers how to cultivate a mindset that embraces stress, and activate the brain's natural ability to learn from challenging experiences. Both practical and life-changing, The Upside of Stress is not a guide to getting rid of stress, but a toolkit for getting better at it--by understanding, accepting, and leveraging it to your advantage.

THIS is the reason why I‘m not reading enough books that make me actually happy! Instead, learning about stress (and other mental health problems!) is causing me stress! If someone could just send me more hours in the day, that would be great!! It seemed like such a good idea when I signed up. The deadline for the first submission is looming....😩

Weekend TBR: A little rereading and prep work for next week! I'm super excited that Kelly McGonigal is coming to talk at my work next week. I love the chapter in this book about how to change mind sets. Aloha Friday 🌺🤓

Weekend TBR: Subtitle: Why stress is good for you, and how to get good at it. I'm working on this one which pretty much sums up life these past two weeks. So far learning about mindset changes has been really useful. Aloha Friday 🌺 #DogsofLitsy

Winnie really doesn't like anything about Halloween so we are celebrating on social media instead. This book has been on my TBR for a couple months. Has anyone read it yet? 🐷👻

Can any fluent Spanish speakers confirm that there is no Spanish word for "stress" (in the sense of the word of being stressed out) that is not taken directly from the English?

TheWellReadOwl There are words that approximate the state of being stressed but the author is right as far as I know. 8y
Captivatedbybooks Yup author is right no exact term for stress 8y
BookishClaire I thought estrés was the word for stressed - at least in European Spanish. 8y

Anabnieto Estrés is used and accepted by RAE (the official dictionary). I some parts of Spain you can also use the word agobiar (sort of angst) 8y
Yossarian @TheWellReadOwl @Captivatedbybooks Thanks for the confirmation. It doesn't "prove" Lucia Berlin's point that stress stems from Anglo culture, but it's an interesting thought. 8y
Captivatedbybooks Really that's what the book is about?! Now this has my attention! 8y
Procrastireader As soon as the siesta officially goes extinct in Spain, there *will* be a word for stress. The siesta was a wonderful cultural marker, and its loss is not a step forward. 8y
DanySpike I'm a little late to the party, but I can also confirm what everyone else is saying here. Here in Chile we use "estrés" or even the word in English, too. "Estoy estresado" (I'm stressed) is a very common thing to say lol 8y
