Childhood should be a happy, carefree time. Yet too many children are stressed-out and exhibiting symptoms of anxiety. In "Freeing Your Child from Anxiety," childhood anxiety expert Dr. Tamar Chansky shares a proven approach for helping children build emotional resilience for a happier and healthier life. Parents everywhere want to know: What is normal? How can you know when stress has crossed over into a full-blown anxiety disorder? How can you prevent anxiety from taking root? And how do you help your son or daughter break free from a pattern of fear and worry and lead a happy, productive life? Fortunately, anxiety is very treatable, and parents can do a lot to help get their children s emotional well-being back on track. "Freeing Your Child from Anxiety" contains easy, fun, and effective tools for teaching children to outsmart their worries and take charge of their fears. This revised and updated edition also teaches how to prepare children to withstand the pressure in our competitive test-driven culture. Learn the tips, techniques, and exercises kids need to implement the book s advice right away, including How to Talk to Your Child sections and Do It Today activities at the end of each chapter. These simple solutions can help parents prevent their children from needlessly suffering today and ensure that their children have the tools they need for a good life tomorrow."

Gave up on this half way through. My step-daughter's anxiety could not be approached using the techniques described because she is too reluctant to talk about exactly what has upset her. This book does not (at least by half-way through) tell me how to break her out of silence to start these fascinating conversations that the book suggests. Otherwise, it seems like the book would be useful.

Cortg My daughter is the same way 😕 6y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book clearly provides the understanding of anxiety and its causes as well as the tools for helping children with anxiety. It was not at all a heavy read or overly clinical.

I feel empowered!

Thanks, @RusskayaChica , for the recommendation. 💙

RusskayaChica Glad you found it accessible! :) 7y

When the body's alarm system is mobilised without any immediate threat, you have anxiety. Unless you have been told that your body can create false alarms, you will continue thinking that there's a real danger.

The Anxiety Formula:

Overestimation of Threat + Underestimation of Ability to Cope = Anxious Response

Brilliant.

PrezBookster Wow that is a great quote 7y
Libby1 I think this makes the issue so simple and clear, @PrezBookster . 7y

Been struggling with my depression lately, so today my mum presented me with this Worry Monster to eat all the painful thoughts. She learned about it on her teachers' training course. She's bought one for her class of 6 year olds...as well as me, her 26yo daughter! Had to post and show you, @Libby1 💙

LauraAndTaraAndBooks @DeborahSmall @Moray_Reads @LeahBergen @OrangeMooseReads @tpixie @Libby1 thank you everyone for your kindness 💛 Haven't actually used the worry monster for putting notes in yet, but snuggling with him while I'm reading and a bit of self care has been surprisingly helpful in keeping the worst at bay. @Dragon She has some absolute golden moments! I started reading this book ages ago but still haven't finished it!

For anyone with children who struggle with anxiety I thought you might enjoy seeing what I picked up earlier today.

It's a Worry Monster. It has a zipper in its mouth and the child can write down their worry and "feed" the Worry Monster.

If you live in the UK they're available for Qe from The Works bargain bookstores.

Libby1 @Reviewsbylola , @LauraAndTaraAndBooks - I remember you were interested in this book! 7y
Libby1 @KVanRead , @Suet624 and @RusskayaChica - I thought you'd like to see this as well. 7y
OrangeMooseReads Ooooh I need to find one of those for Man Cub. 7y

LauraAndTaraAndBooks Thank you so much for remembering! That looks brilliant, I shall get one asap. MiniMe came home today with a "sadness cup." Each kid had a cup and their classmates wrote something nice about them to put in it, so that if ever anyone was feeling sad, they could read the little slips and feel better. Some of the comments were so beautiful and uplifting. These 7yr olds are nicer to each other than a lot of the adults I know!! 7y
Reviewsbylola Wow, I love that. I wonder how my daughter would feel about it. Sometimes she gets scared by monsters. 7y
KVanRead Thank you! 7y
Suet624 Thanks so much! 7y
Libby1 @OrangeMooseReads - I hope you can find one! Where are you based? 7y
Libby1 @LauraAndTaraAndBooks - that is lovely. 😊 7y
Libby1 @Reviewsbylola - it's a really cute, soft, fluffy monster if that helps! 7y

I started this one this morning.

Thanks for the recommendation, @RusskayaChica .💙

RusskayaChica Hope you find some helpful ideas :) 7y
Reviewsbylola Ooh I may need to check this one out. My daughter gets a lot of separation anxiety. Yesterday she asked me why it's ok for parents to leave their children alone at school. She thinks that's very mean. 😬 7y
LauraAndTaraAndBooks Ooh please let me know how this one is xxx 7y

Suet624 @Reviewsbylola I mostly agree with your daughter. 7y
KVanRead Look forward to your thoughts on this one! We're dealing with that at home too. 7y
Libby1 Thanks, @RusskayaChica ❤️. Wish I could see you in real life. 7y
Libby1 @Reviewsbylola , @LauraAndTaraAndBooks , @Suet624 , @KVanRead - I'll let you all know soon. I made a bit of progress with it last night. I felt a lot of compassion for my child before and even more so now. Any book that can do this can only be good. ❤️ 7y
LauraAndTaraAndBooks Thank you! Just got MiniMe home from the school fete, where he got himself all stressed out and now I have the remnants on his tiger face paint all over my jumper where he cried it off into my tummy. It's so difficult to know what to do for the best when he gets like that 💔 7y

For the most part, I found this book to be very helpful. It was a little repetitious at times, but maybe that can't be helped because people may skip around in the book, and some information is relevant to various issues. Overall, a good book.

A little help for the parents too!

I've started employing some of these strategies with my 8yo, and I'm already seeing changes in her behavior. I'm also trying to use them on myself! Time will tell. I'm resistant and not the best patient.

On a more encouraging note, many of the coping strategies are mechanisms I have discovered on my own. That said, the ones that are new to me might help both of us!

I picked this book up to find new ways to help my anxious 8 yo. Little did I know that apparently my way of coping with the world is exactly what she's trying to teach kids not to do! I think I see a problem here....

I just finished the audiobook, which may not be the most recent version. Chansky explains forms of anxiety and ways parents can help their kids (and themselves!) cope. Her work is based on a cognitive-behavioral approach (CBT), which has evidence behind it. There are other approaches that are evidence-based, too, although after reading her book, you'd think CBT is the only way to go (it isn't).

Libby1 I've added this to my TBR. 💚 7y
RusskayaChica Cool :). She definitely has some good ideas. 7y
