In Twenty Years
In Twenty Years | Allison Winn Scotch
Twenty years ago, six Penn students shared a house, naively certain that their friendships would endure until the death of their ringleader and dear friend Bea splintered the group for good. Now, mostly estranged from one another, the remaining five reluctantly gather at that same house on the eve of what would have been Bea s fortieth birthday. But along with the return of the friends come old grudges, unrequited feelings, and buried secrets. Catherine, the CEO of a domestic empire, and Owen, a stay-at-home dad, were picture-perfect college sweethearts but now teeter on the brink of disaster. Lindy, a well-known musician, is pushing middle age in an industry that s all about youth and slowly self-destructing as she grapples with her own identity. Behind his smile, handsome plastic surgeon Colin harbors the heartbreaking truth about his own history with Bea. And Annie carefully curates her life on Instagram and Facebook, keeping up appearances so she doesn t have to face the truth about her own empty reality.Reunited in the place where so many dreams began, and bolstered by the hope of healing, each of them is forced to confront the past."

I enjoyed this story about a group of friends and their friendship over the years. They go their separate ways, come back together, had fights, separated, and then finally all came back together on the 40th birthday of one of the friends who had died a few years previously. How the one person in their group that is no longer alive and with them can bring them all back together and promote healing.

I read this last night while fighting insomnia (Sunday night, Daylight Savings). Quick pace and held my interest, but the ending didn‘t really pack a punch for me. A good beach read of a book.

I loved the concept of this book. I could totally relate to its plot. I did enjoy this one as a character study but would not consider it to be a page-turner. It was more of a slow burn. This book's strength are the relatable and interesting characters.

5 long lost college best friends reunited for a holiday weekend, all discovering they're just as a mess at 40 as they were at 22. Sometimes stories that rotate between multiple POV narrators lose my interest because they hop around too much. This story rotated between 5 friends seamlessly. I've always been a fan of the author and this didn't disappoint.

When you essentially live where everyone else vacations, it's hard to buckle down and write that paper about NOAA budget cuts, when you'd rather just start a new book and enjoy the day.

Have you ever liked a book while simultaneously being annoyed with it? I was interested in the story of a group of college friends who reunite after 20 years, but these people could solve a lot of problems by actually talking to the people in their lives rather than expecting someone to magically figure out what the other person needs! The narrator was good but the way she voiced the male characters made them seem half asleep. #PopSugarChallenge

OriginalCyn620 I was thinking about reading this. Now maybe not so much! 7y
MallenNC @CynthiaF.Buck It's not bad, just not great. I want to read more by the author because I've heard good things about her other books. 7y

I found this book on Amazon, as a book I might like. Well Amazon was wrong, I didn't like. I pushed through it hoping it was just a slow start, and because I hate giving up, but it never got better. Too many characters to keep straight, not a good enough story line. I wouldn't recommended.

Interesting book about a group of friends who returned to the house they lived in during their college years at Penn for the 4th of July weekend 18 years after graduation. It would also have been the 40th birthday of their housemate who died at age 27. All of the characters were young enough to be my sons and daughters and their lifestyles were different than mine was at that age but it was a good read.

Started this today... Saw mixed reviews on it, but so far I'm liking it. And it's an easy read.... I read 1/4 of it in less than an hour.

Lauren.Archer It was a poor retelling of The Big Chill. That is all I can compare it to. The characters were all whiny. 8y

A group of friends reunite at their old college house after many years thanks to a letter from their deceased friend. It's an entertaining beach read about friendship and it held my attention, but was just ok for me in the end.

Tav I loved her debut novel. 8y

I am an AWS fan from all the way back. I've read all her books (some more than once) I have to say though; this one just didn't do it for me. I was with her in the beginning. The setup was good. The characters were substantive and believable. Then it just kind of wandered. Some of the characters (ahem, Lindy) really began to irk me. And the wrap up was a bit too schmaltzy. I like a nice ending, but since there's nothing between Pick and So-So 😕

I'm a little over halfway through listening to this novel. The characters are varied and quite interesting, and it's a light, dramatic, summery read. (And the cover is quite pretty! And it's set in Philadelphia, which is my hometown! Bonuses! 👍)

Bookhound1 I want to read this one soon. 8y

Good summer book about friendship, relationships & where a group of friends find themselves in 20 years. Didn't like most of the characters at first but they grew & grew on me. Poignant but w/ funny moments. Paired w/California Roll Poke Bowl inspired by my life 20 years ago-review/recipe on blog.

Bookhound1 @DebinHawaii I like books where characters are shown at different intervals of their life. 8y
DebinHawaii @Bookhound1 Me too. This one focuses mostly on college and present day but does give glimpses of some of the years in between. I would have liked an epilogue with what happened next (2 years, 5... to see if the growth stuck & what happens to them. ;-) 8y
