Goth Girl and the Fete Worse Than Death
Goth Girl and the Fete Worse Than Death | Chris Riddell
9 posts | 5 read | 7 to read
Packed full with beautiful black and white illustrations from author Chris Riddell, Goth Girl and the Fete Worse Than Death follows the adventures of Ada Ghastly-Gorm in the sequel to the award-winning Goth Girl and the Ghost of a Mouse. Preparations for the Ghastly-Gorm Garden Party and bake-off are under way. Celebrity cooks are arriving at the hall for the big event and, true to form, Maltravers, the indoor gamekeeper, is acting suspiciously. Elsewhere at Ghastly-Gorm Ada's wardrobe-dwelling lady's maid Marylebone has received a marriage proposal. Ada vows to aid the course of true love and find out what Maltravers is up to, but amidst all this activity, everyone, including her father, appears to have forgotten her birthday!

Finished this wonderfully punny audiobook while stretching my legs the other evening. I‘m sure the print would have lots of extra something, with Riddell‘s drawings, but it stood up great as audio-only. It has cakes, vampires, painters, celebrity chefs and marmalade sandwiches - what more do you want really? Nigella Sugarspoon will forever be Nigella Sugarspoon in my mind now 🧁. Hope the library has the others! 🦇🎪🎂🎨🤺🌝🐻

4thhouseontheleft I don‘t think I could do a Chris Riddell illustrated book on audio, I love his illustrations to much! 1mo
julesG @4thhouseontheleft Same here! The illustrations for Goth Girl are great. I'm going to share some for you Rachel. 1mo
RachelO @julesG @4thhouseontheleft I bought a print copy for my brother last year - he‘s very big on puns and cooking programmes, but was ‘why have you got me a kids book‘? I was kind of reading it to check I was right & he‘d love it if he actually opened it (🙄). I‘ll be finding it on his bookshelf and reading the pictures shortly! 1mo

#weeklyforecast

It‘s a 3-deadline week coming up, so the chances are I won‘t be reading too much 🥺. I‘d like to finish Moonlight over Mayfair in print, and this wonderfully silly audio - best appreciated if you have at least a passing knowledge of British TV cooking programmes 🎂 Anything extra will be a bonus!

Cinfhen Good luck with the deadlines 🍀💚 1mo

I fell asleep to this last night (which is why it takes me so long to get through audiobooks!).

It begins, not with an actual #SwordFight , but with umbrella-fencing amongst the chimneypots of Ghastly-Gorm Hall, (which is kind of close??!) Didn‘t quite make is far as #EntryToTheGreatHall, but I‘m sure it‘s coming!

#24in48 @24in48 #stack

Since my kiddo will join me for part of the readathon there's a German middle grade book among the stack.

Also, I intend to finish an eARC and there might be Eleanor Oliphant on audio.

You probably know Chris Riddell as the illustrator of books like The Graveyard Book and the Lie Tree but he's also an author in his own right. The Goth Girl books are a delight, chock-full of literary references and brilliant puns. Join Ada, the Attic Club and a host of oddly familiar chefs as they prepare for the Great Ghastly Gorm Bake Off. But is there something more sinister going on? Perhaps mysterious, monocled Lord Sydney Whimsy can help...

JillR Also check out his Ottoline series 👍 2y
batsy If there's a monocled Lord Whimsy, I'm sold 😂 2y
Andrew65 Need to check this out. 2y

Moray_Reads @batsy Right?! It is a lot of fun 2y
RachelO Does it work as a standalone, or do you need to have read the first one? 2y
Moray_Reads @RachelO it's probably best to read the first one, it introduces all the characters but you could get away with starting with this one. The first one is 2y
RachelO @Moray_Reads Thank you! 2y

RachelO That might be the brother's birthday present sorted. (Of course I'll need to check its suitability first 😉). Particularly liking the manservant!! 2y
