King Henry V - the great Lion of England - is long dead. In 1437 his gentle son comes of age and takes the throne. Frail in body and mind, King Henry VI is dependent on his supporters to run his kingdom. Richard, Duke of York, however, believes that without a strong king England will fall.

Conn Iggulden created a fascinating first novel in a series sure to be a hit. He illuminates an historical period rife with peace and war. He brings the characters in Stormbird back to life making the reader feel like they stepped back in time. Highly recommended historical fiction!

Marina_h @RJHowe I definitely will! I've read his Emperor and Conqueror series and was a big fan of both, so I don't know why I haven't read the Wars of the Roses series already. 6mo

Finished another door stopper. I actually liked this historical novel so much that I will read the second part right away. I do need to brush up a little bit on the War of the Roses. well-written and really worthwhile the time.

How many like reading in 'solitude? Oddly enough I find reading in solitude, comforting and enjoy my reading time much more. I think that is because I am home alone all day and it is very pleasant having that time to myself. I can read anywhere, noise does not bother me when reading a book...but there's something special about being surrounded in quietness.

Do you like to read in solitude?

A fantastic story of one of the most interesting parts of English history! This first one explores the tensions and betrayals which will eventually lead to the Wars of the Roses; the weakness of the new king Henry, his marriage, the loss of British territory in France, Duke of York slowly taking over government.

Fantastic pacing so you got lots of lovely detail but weren‘t bogged down by it. Fully rounded, flawed characters. And still surprises!

Mr Iggulden (Conn Iggulden to you guys) was my English teacher. He was a young teacher with floppy hair and a lot of stories writing in his spare time. He was a lot of fun. I still find it strange when I see his name on here and in book shops. It's no wonder I got an A* in English Language 😄

This book abounds with the conniving duplicity that some people are willing & able to employ to attain ultimate power over others. Iggulden employs tremendous skill in weaving this epic tale of fact & fiction. It's ruthless, brutally authentic, tenderly poignant & intensely gripping, sometimes all at the same time. At times he even has the unique ability of getting you to emphasize with the villains... 😱 Bloody Brilliant! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 of 5 😍❤️

This book is epic! Woodchurch and his son Rowen... I'm totally invested in them, they're complicated and multilayered as are all the main characters real or fictional. The history behind the training and dedication to be an English longbow man astounding.. it was the most lethal and decimating weapon of its time.. the battle scenes are vivid. 🤗

About a third of the way through..this book is OUTSTANDING historical fiction & incredibly well written! Multiple storylines involving riveting historical figures who influenced & changed history! Fictional Thomas Woodchurch & his son Rowen are my favourites. Iggulden brings them all vividly to life..he writes so beautifully that you feel like you've been transported back in time & are witnessing events, where, when & how they really unfolded🤗
