This book, a Geisel Award winner, is about blades of grass growing into different “ests“ but ultimately coming to together with similarities in the end.

I would use this book in my future classroom, because it is an easy read for children and it could help children find their own identity.

I thought this book was age appropriate and appealing to children who feel different or aren't sure who they are yet.

We Are Growing written by Laurie Keller. Geisel Award winning book. A cute picture book about grass growing and becoming different “ests“ but in the end it focuses on what makes us the same.

A Theodor Seuss Geisel Award winning book, this is a cute and enthusiastic story perfect for young readers learning how to read with expression. Go on an adventure of discovery with this story that teaches everyone is unique and important. #UCFLAE3414SP18

sboynt The teaching strategies including IR, S, RT, RA, and CR could be used. This website has many lesson ideas to incorporate for the story, http://www.theclassroombookshelf.com/2017/01/2017-geisel-winner-we-are-growing/ I liked the Readers Theatre activity to really get the students involved. 6y
sboynt UDL 1.3 to offer alternatives for visual information and EL 16 to integrate speaking, listening, reading and writing activities would be great to use for this story so that students can not only see the words in the text but hear them as well. 6y
WendyV That‘s great that you enjoyed this book too! I love the resource you provided! 👍🏻 6y

We Are Growing! By Laurie Keller, is a MF picture book, great for RA, IR, PT, & S, and is the 2017 recipient of the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award. This book is ideal for beginner readers and is a cute story! Walt, a blade of grass, sees all his other grass friends growing, and notices everyone is becoming the most something-est. Walt struggles to figure out what he is, but quickly figures it out when a big surprise rolls their way. #ucflae3414sp18

WendyV I think this book would tie in nicely for younger students who are learning the science of how plants grow. This is a link for a c-Palms lesson plan on exploring plants and studying their growth. Instead of using Jack and the Bean Stalk, use We Are Growing! (Or both!)

WendyV I would use UDL 3.1 with this by activating students prior knowledge on plant growth. Also, since this book is great for beginner readers, I would use EL strategy 38 and have the student take a copy of this book home to practice short reading. 6y
Hervela.L I had to stop and read your post because I love mo willems so far! After reading this post I will definitely be reading this book I enjoyed the post a great deal. This book seem so interesting and is a part of a subject area that's a lot of students don't like. I believe this book will allow students from a young age to begin a curiosity about science. WendyV I really like Mo Willems too. His elephant & piggies books are really cute. I really want to get the 4 book series for my classroom library. 6y
sboynt I had to read this book after your Book Boost, it sounded so cute! The lesson seems perfect to correlate to the book! And the UDL and EL strategies seem like they will work perfectly for the learners. 6y
WendyV Thanks @sboynt I‘m glad you were interested in this book too! 6y
DrSpalding Your book boost! Another fine post by you @WendyV ❤️📚 6y

We Are Growing! is a MF book written by Laurie Keller with the help of Mo Willems. It won the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award for the most distinguished American book for beginning readers. It is about 8 friends who are growing up fast in many different ways! I thought it was funny and really cute! This would be fun for a younger class to do a RT to practice fluency with the short text. #ucflae3414f17

MeghanW EL Strategy 17: provide contextual support through audio visuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language and facial expressions. UDL Strategy 7.3: minimize threats and distractions. https://www.smore.com/g1c9j-growing-readers-together this is a great resource for teachers to use to help students learn about fluency and prefixes/suffixes 6y

Elephant and Piggie Like Reading! We Are Growing!, is the 2017 Geisel winner award! Walt‘s friends are growing faster and faster everyday. Everyone is growing distinctly, in some ways or another, but Walt does not seem to be growing at all. As all of his wait for a big surprise, Walt makes a discovery, and finds something about himself that is special!

AlexaDP I think this book would be great for DR. It gives students a chance to explore their inner thespian! 6y
AlexaDP For this book, I think the best ESOL 3; encouraging self-talk (positive thinking) 5, teaching technical vocabulary supporting key concepts, and 16, integrating speaking, listening, reading and writing activities and UDL strategies, 2.4; promoting understanding across languages, 4.1; varying the methods for response and navigation, and 9.1; promoting expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation. 6y
AlexaDP http://pigeonpresents.com/content/uploads/2017/08/EandP-like-reading-books-activ... this website takes you to some worksheets and activities that you can do with your students after reading this book. They are very simple, and would be better suited for younger grades, but they definitely can be useful for an after book activity. #ucflae3414f17 (edited) 6y
MeghanW I think this would be a great book for a DR. I also think it would be good for a RT because the text is short and younger students can practice and learn how to speak fluently. 6y

We Are Growing is a TL, Theodor Suess Geisel award winning book
written & illustrated by Laurie Keller and it would be best used in a
RT. This book is for 3-5 year old‘s so it would be perfect for an
elementary school classroom library. The story follows Walt (who is a
piece of grass) & his friends. All of his friends are growing up and
they‘re either the tallest, the curliest, the silliest, etc. Everyone
is growing except for Walt so he starts

JocelynNolton to get discouraged but in the
end he finds out something that is special about him. This book can be
used to introduce the concept of growing in humans, animals, and even
plants. This link has a lot of teaching ideas that can help you find
ways to use this book in the classroom.
http://www.theclassroombookshelf.com/2017/01/2017-geisel-winner-we-are-growing/
The UDL principle 4.2- optimize access to tools and assistive
technologies & EL 46- Use discovery learning activities
(hands-on-activities) will work well with this book. #ucflae3414f17

"Piggie! Look at this new book! It is as exciting as watching grass grow - because it IS watching grass grow!"
Mo Willems cracks me up every time. A book for emerging readers that won't bore adults who are supervising their efforts.

Mo Willems' "Elephant and Piggie" books are some of the most beloved in our library. I am delighted with this new series, "Elephant and Piggie Like Reading," for early readers.

Although not written by Willems, this book is hilarious and contains vibrant, humorous illustrations, perfectly in keeping with Mo Willems' style.

I read this one to my daughter in the bookstore and we were laughing out loud.
