The Woman Who Breathed Two Worlds
The Woman Who Breathed Two Worlds | Selina Siak Chin Yoke
14 posts | 6 read | 20 to read
Facing challenges in an increasingly colonial world, Chye Hoon, a rebellious young girl, must learn to embrace her mixed Malayan-Chinese identity as a Nyonya--and her destiny as a cook, rather than following her first dream of attending school like her brother. Amidst the smells of chillies and garlic frying, Chye Hoon begins to appreciate the richness of her traditions, eventually marrying Wong Peng Choon, a Chinese man. Together, they have ten children. At last, she can pass on the stories she has heard--magical tales of men from the sea--and her warrior's courage, along with her wonderful kueh (cakes). But the cultural shift towards the West has begun. Chye Hoon finds herself afraid of losing the heritage she so prizes as her children move more and more into the modernising Western world.

#2018Book14
The best parts of this book involve the main character's upbringing in her Malaysian household. Learning about the various aspects of the culture are interesting and something I hadn't read before. After the main character gets married, though, the story starts to drag. She has ten children, most of whom have names that are incredibly similar, making it hard to determine who she's talking about. And it's written in pidgin English.

Read my reviews of Selina Siak Chin Yoke's historical fiction novels set in Malaysia in the late 1800s and 1900s. They were beautifully written and taught me so much about Malaysian history and culture. 4 stars for each one! https://novelsandnonfiction.com/2017/08/08/author-spotlight-selina-siak-chin-yok...

#TBRtemptation post 5! This is the first installment in the Malayan series. (Don't let anyone tell you I'm not the first to tell you about firsts!) Chye Hoon s a rebellious young Malayan-Chinese woman. She's destined to be a cook, married to Wong, and learns to embrace her culture's heritage. Cultural shifts toward Western influence are on the rise though. A story about individuality and society, passion and duty. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

4th book finished w/ less than an hour to go for #24in48readathon. It was EXCELLENT! I loved everything about this beautiful book! It was especially interesting to see so many important world events at the turn of the 20th century from a different perspective; the Great War, influenza outbreak, & modernization. Looking forward to the 2nd book in the series, which follows WWII.

21 hour mark!!! 🎉🎉 Can't believe how quickly this weekend has gone by. I was definitely dragging a little bit earlier, but knowing the finish line is almost here, I've gained momentum. I plan on finishing two books in the next three hours. Then I'm watching the new episode of Game of Thrones. 👑 I think I'm due a bit of self indulgence, don't you?

Just a quick update for #24in48readathon. I'm taking a break to get ready, and then heading to breakfast with the BF, who is also participating in the #24in48 this weekend. He melts my heart, with the way he ALWAYS supports my bookworm ways. ❤️ After breakfast, we'll be heading to a favorite café, where we plan to read the afternoon away.

Mehso-so

This book details the life of a Chinese Malaysian woman from 1878 to 1943. It is interesting to read about a different culture and a different way of life. Unfortunately the writing style made it difficult to lose myself in the book. The author explained how she chose to use poor grammar to denote different education levels. I just found it distracting. And I didn't feel any connection to the characters. I didn't really care what happened to them.

I really enjoyed listening to this book. It was interesting to read a novel about the West interfering with someone's culture from the point of view of the locals. Trying to live into two cultures as a mixed child and going through periods of great technological change also made this incredibly relatable despite the time, place, and culture difference. Great characters, great writing, great story. I look forward to the next in the series!

Started listening to this today. It was just what I needed, emersing in a totally different place and different time and different culture.
Idk what happened last night and I've been speechless all day because there's no excusing or apologizing for my demographic. We dropped the ball, we have to do better next time.

BookishFeminist 💖💖 Today I mourn, tomorrow I raise hell. I am right there with you. I am fucking pissed at white people. There is no excuse. 7y
literarymermaid @BookishFeminist Thank you. I'm trying to figure out what the best thing to do is to raise hell. I've never been politically involved before but I'm feeling like its time. 7y
BookishFeminist @StoredFeminism I can help with that if you want. DC native so I was born this way. Volunteering your time for social justice orgs, challenging all white bigotry, especially casual racism, donating money to orgs likely to lose funding & needing to mobilize like PPACT & Emilys List, and just speaking out everywhere are great places to start. I'm ready. 💪🏼 7y
