In the course of a single day in 1976, the span of this elegiac novel, while in San Francisco attending a conference on agricultural technology, an emotionally troubled journalist wanders through pre-dawn streets reflecting on the early days of his marriage, on his parents and their love of the land. Today is my beloved librarian aunt's birthday. It's our first without her. My family is coming together to remember and celebrate her shortly but I'm just taking a quiet moment to curl up with a book and think about her. ❤️

...one cannot know enough to trust. To trust is simply to give oneself; the giving is for the future, for which there is no evidence. And once given, the self cannot be taken back, whatever the evidence. --p. 110
