The Double Helix
The Double Helix: A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA | James D. Watson
6 posts | 10 read | 12 to read
The classic personal account of Watson and Cricks groundbreaking discovery of the structure of DNA, now with an introduction by Sylvia Nasar, author of A Beautiful Mind. By identifying the structure of DNA, the molecule of life, Francis Crick and James Watson revolutionized biochemistry and won themselves a Nobel Prize. At the time, Watson was only twenty-four, a young scientist hungry to make his mark. His uncompromisingly honest account of the heady days of their thrilling sprint against other world-class researchers to solve one of sciences greatest mysteries gives a dazzlingly clear picture of a world of brilliant scientists with great gifts, very human ambitions, and bitter rivalries. With humility unspoiled by false modesty, Watson relates his and Cricks desperate efforts to beat Linus Pauling to the Holy Grail of life sciences, the identification of the basic building block of life. Never has a scientist been so truthful in capturing in words the flavor of his work.

Despite Watson's perennially terrible opinions, the work of Watson, Crick and Franklin is part of what inspired me to take a left turn and study science after I got my two English Lit degrees.

Here's my incredibly apropos BSc graduation present from my wife: pendant and matching earrings.

(From sciencejewelry1824.com/ They're way too persistent with notifs and follow ups, but say no to those and you'll be fine. The jewellery itself is lovely.)

QueenJen Fantastic! Congrats! 5y

I'd rather be getting in some quality reading time with my lonely TBR shelf. Instead, I'm studying for my testimony coming up on Thursday. Absolute worst part of my job - it's so draining as an introvert! Wish me luck! 💜

MallenNC Wow. Good luck! 7y
Jas16 Good luck 🍀 7y
LiteraryinLawrence You can do it! And then you should reward yourself with quiet book time. 7y

Pickpick

Regarding an after-dinner anecdote Watson shared about the discovery: "my unexpected candor elicited much laughter and was later praised for allowing the audience to feel like insiders into one of science's big moments." This annotated & illustrated version was very entertaining!
NOW I need to read a book about Franklin.

PlannerGirlBookClub Rosalind Franklin: The Dark Lady of DNA is a good one about her! 8y
BkClubCare Oh THANK you @PlannerGirlBookClub - I was hoping someone would give me a recommendation. 8y

Ian McEwan blurbs on the back of my library's copy of The Annotated & Illustrated: "... best book I know about a scientific discovery-" (I just finished a book by IMcE)
#booktober My #bookmarks are the library reminder slip of due date and a label off of a mini pie I once bought...

BkClubCare Goodness Gracious! Watson's style is breezy and almost but not quite sarcastic? I am failing to find the words that describe his way with words - VERY entertaining. 8y
BkClubCare "He regarded the scheme as a perfect example of the inability of Americans to know how to behave. Nonetheless, he promised to go along with this nonsense." 8y
BkClubCare (wow, he got scolded for writing official letters in his own handwriting and not typing them! 8y
