My Brother
My Brother | Jamaica Kincaid
4 posts | 8 read | 3 to read
Jamaica Kincaid's brother Devon Drew died of AIDS on January 19, 1996, at the age of thirty-three. Kincaid's incantatory, poetic, and often shockingly frank recounting of her brother's life and death is also a story of her family on the island of Antigua, a constellation centered on the powerful, sometimes threatening figure of the writer's mother. My Brother is an unblinking record of a life that ended too early, and it speaks volumes about the difficult truths at the heart of all families. My Brother is a 1997 National Book Award Finalist for Nonfiction.

Mehso-so

This was a memoir Kincaid wrote after the death of her brother in the mid-90's to HIV/AIDS. It felt very personal, almost like a stream-of-consciousness diary she was writing to help in the processing of her grief. As such, it was hard to follow her train of thought at times. I'm glad I read it, but not sure I would recommend it.

The book I‘m reading for the #booked2022 prompt about HIV/AIDS was written in 1997. It‘s a flashback to the past.😔

I‘ve worked as a case manager for those living with HIV or AIDS in the 21st century. In some ways, we have come so far.

In other ways, the stigma still remains.

Amiable Have you read “And the Band Played On” by Randy Shilts? It was a stupendous work of journalism. 2y
alisiakae @Amiable yes, I read it a long time ago! 2y

I‘ve been quieter on Litsy lately, but I had a lot of fun shopping local Indie bookstores in April! Our local stores put together an Book Crawl, and I was able to visit 7 of the 11 stores participating ahead of Independent Bookstore. Happy with my #bookhaul

Tagged my pick for #booked202 about HIV/AIDS

alisiakae @DivineDiana this was a brand new thing this year! It was fun finding some new bookshops, including one tucked into a local market/pub. 😃 2y
