Heart-wrenching, beautiful, hopeful. This got right into my heart & pulled all the strings. Set in small-town rural Canada in the 1990s, this short novel delves deeply into a set of characters linked by their connections to a teen denied gender-affirming care. It‘s a quiet story exploring discomfort and transition & sometimes surprising connections—some fleeting, but all transformative. I loved this. It will likely end up on my best-of this year!

BarbaraJean Thank you @monalyisha for the #AuldLangSpine rec! 3w
monalyisha Wasn‘t it incredible? I can‘t believe it didn‘t garner more attention! 3w
BarbaraJean @monalyisha Seriously amazing. Not sure HOW it flew so far under the radar. I was glad that my library had it, although it was only available via hoopla. 3w

Not enough “wows” for this one - absolutely brilliant!! Read to familiarize myself with her work because Bear is a #CampLitsy24 choice - and @BarbaraBB loved it so I thought I might too ♥️ Beautifully written, and each story came together seamlessly. Learned a lot about a place I know nothing about. Best part was the ending, just incredible!

Soubhiville Agreed! I thought this was an amazing book. Really looking forward to Bear. 4w
CBee @Soubhiville me too 👏🏻 4w
BarbaraBB Thank you for trusting my opinion 😊. I am glad you loved it too and am looking forward to reading Bear together 💕 4w

sarahbarnes I‘ve been wanting to pick this up too since we picked Bear for camp and I haven‘t read this one. Glad to see you and @BarbaraBB liked it! 4w
LeeRHarry Just seen I‘ve already stacked this already - maybe I should check if my library has it. 😊 4w
Deblovestoread So glad this was on a prior year #AuldLangSpine list…so good! 4w
Amiable I really liked this book, too! Went to a local book club meetup where they were discussing it—when the majority of attendees started trashing on the book because they didn‘t like the structure (ie different character viewpoint in each chapter), I knew this wasn‘t the book club for me. 😄 4w
CBee @Amiable I wouldn‘t fit in at that book club either 😂 4w
CBee @sarahbarnes hope you like it when you get to it 😊 4w
CBee @LeeRHarry hope you like! 4w
CBee @Deblovestoread I saw that you loved it too, we have such similar tastes 😊 4w
SamAnne So good. I need to put this on the list for a reread. 4w
CBee @SamAnne definitely one that I‘d consider rereading at some point 😊 4w

Sadly, this one didn‘t work for me. I think it was mostly because I tried to read it during a super busy time and I needed to dedicate more attention to the nuances in the three separate timelines. These three interconnected stories feature women who are at the mercy of the men in their lives, and take place over centuries. I may revisit this sometime since it was an #auldlangspine pick from the trusted @TheKidUpstairs

Ruthiella I‘ll definitely keep timing in mind when I read this. I really liked her previous book 4w
TheKidUpstairs I'm sorry this one didn't work for you! I love Evie Wyld, but she is definitely one you have to be in the right mood and headspace for. 4w

My #MayTBR Honestly, I doubt I‘ll get to all of these. I have a big work trip with long flights that may/may not help because of all the work around them. Nonetheless I‘m loading my Kindle & joining in on #SundayBuddyRead #ChildrensClassicRead2024 #NancyDrewBR #SheSaid #BobWhiteBuddies #Naturalitsy #FoodAndLit #Roll100 & #SeasonalCozies I‘m also reading a book for virtual foodie book club, a book for the work trip, some #SeriesLove2024 titles & ⬇️

DebinHawaii …one from my #AuldLangSpine list too. And a couple “just because” titles. We‘ll see what happens & what ends up sneaking in the mix. 📚📚🤷🏻‍♀️📚📚📚 1mo
TheSpineView I love long flights. I can get tons of reading time in. 1mo

#BookReport 19/24

Bitter Herbs (Het bittere kruid) is fantastic, a Dutch classic rediscovered and an absolute gem. I also loved Mrs Caliban and want to read more Ingalls. Dolly Maunders I am still thinking of even though I didn‘t like the book that much. What‘s left of me is yours was enjoyable too but one I won‘t remember for long.

DebinHawaii Mrs. Caliban does not get enough love! I was turned onto it a few years ago for #AuldLangSpine & still think about it & recommend it! Stacking Bitter Herbs & the tagged book. 💛 (edited) 1mo

What did I just read?! Because my heart has been ripped out & now I have to wait, WAIT, for the sequel.

I don't think I'm going to make it. Had I known, HAD I KNOWN, this was book 1 & there will be a book 2, I would have left this book ON MY SHELF until book 2 was released like exactly what I did with Strike the Zither by Joan He. Instead, I'm left with a gaping hole in my chest.

This is why I normally read reviews & check out the book. 👇🏻

wanderinglynn But no, I had to, JUST HAD TO, go into this book blind.

Lesson learned universe, LESSON LEARNED!

I could not put this book down. I started it and as much as I wanted to take my time and savor all the delicious prose, I also wanted to know. Beautiful writing with such emotional depth.

wanderinglynn I absolutely love this story. It might be my favorite of the year.

Such a crazy week! I‘m still putting together my May TBR but here is my April recap. Surprisingly, I finished 18 books this month. The fact that several were short novellas or children‘s books helped.😉

I took part in #SundayBuddyRead #JaneAdjacent #ChildrensClassicRead2024 NancyDrewBR #BobWhiteBuddies #SheSaid #TravelingStars2024 & #SeasonalCozies I also finished all 3 of my #Roll100 books & read several #SeriesLove2024 books & one from my ⬇️

DebinHawaii #AuldLangSpine list & knocked out a couple of challenge prompts. While I didn‘t get around to a couple of books/challenges I wanted to, I feel great about the month. I enjoyed most of what I read but standouts were Zorrie, The Second, Saving Mr. Rochester, A First Time for Everything & the final 2 1/2 books in The Naturals series. 1mo

#ReadAway2024 #AwesomeApril #readathon

Finished the last chapters on the plane yesterday but as I was 3/4 done, I‘m counting it as an April book. This was on my #AuldLangSpine list from @Itchyfeetreader (I‘m trying for one per month) & while I didn‘t love it as much as the others I‘ve read from the list, it gets a pick. The writing is gorgeous but pensive, even a little depressing & I found myself wanting to shake both MCs, a pair of somewhat ⬇️

DebinHawaii …star-crossed lovers who just can‘t get on the same page at the same time & as much time as they spend talking, don‘t communicate all that well. Since I have never found a true romantic soulmate, this probably bugged me more than it might others . Despite it all, it was still worth the read for the quality of the writing & a soft pick. 1mo
