I love how this book incorporates geography, astronomy, history, and more in a fun and silly way. It‘s full of important facts about the earth, and the illustrations promote diversity. It also includes lots of non-fiction text features and would be appropriate for all primary and secondary grade levels. 🌎🌍🌏

DrSpalding I love that you are still posting! Proud of you. This looks great! 6y

A cute tail of animal outcasts that teaches the reader about friendship and acceptance. A perfect story for young children who love animals and need a reminder of what being a good friend is all about. 🐘

I loved this story! A quick and easy read. I couldn‘t help but fall in love with Jackson and his family. A great book for children who may carry the burden of financial struggles at home. It‘s nice that such a story exists for children facing these issues to relate to.

DrSpalding Now you need to read Wishtree by Applegate!❤️📚 6y

I've read this NF book with my son so many times that it's falling apart! This book is packed with facts but they are written simply enough for students of all ages to understand. Fantastic pictures are included on each page and the way the book is organized, you could easily choose specific sections to focus on. NG also has lots of online activities to explore space further: http://kids.nationalgeographic.com #UCFLAE3414SU17

DrSpalding You can't do much better than National Geographic for NF. Some books now come with QR codes to take readers directly to the digital content on their site! 7y
StephanieP Great way to keep your son engaged and learn about real facts! 7y

Loved this F story and K-2 students will too! The storyline is fun and the illustrations are amazing. Another story you can incorporate into all subject matters. Great around Halloween. Perfect read aloud during a unit on plants. Covers imagination. Cause and effect. So much to choose from! Check out some other ideas here: https://www.islma.org/pdf/monarchDocs/Creepy_CarrotsD.pdf #UCFLAE3414SU17

Ashleywwolfe I haven't read this book yet but the illustrations and information from one of our articles on the illustration background has made me put this in my stack. Plus having cause and effect for your suggested age group always helps with implicit instruction! 7y
Angiepuc I would like to read this book! I think it's crazy that the illustrator and author didn't meet face to face in the process of making this book 7y
Chanelamber I want to read this book! I was reading A3 and it was all about an interview with the illustrator Peter Brown - he seems great and getting a little more insight from him made me want to get familiar with his craft. Thanks for sharing! 7y

In this F story, a farmer finds himself in negotiations with his barnyard animals. It's a great story to introduce both letter writing and the concept of a strike. The cute plot twist at the end is the best part of the story! You can find a great lesson plan here: http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/learning-about-wo... #UCFLAE3414SU17

Elizabethhunt96 I like that you used readwritethink! Also your ideas for lessons are great!! And I'm excited for the plot twist, I haven't read the book yet. 7y

This story is a modern day version of the classic fairy-tale (TL) Little Red Riding Hood. This version takes place in Africa and Little Red successfully interferes with the lions plans to eat her aunt. There are several activities that can be used to go along with this silly story, five are listed here: https://goo.gl/nZ5tVD #UCFLAE3414SU17

DrSpalding Yes! What a neat folklore variant! The ideas suggested don't mention pointing out Africa on a map or via Google Earth! The first one says - great read aloud and another says, make props! Storytelling option? 7y
tfundora I've never heard of this book! Looks interesting! 7y

A hermit crab is on the hunt for a new home in this excellent F picture book. This story can be used to teach about ocean life but also takes you through each month of the year, so there are lots of subject areas that can be covered throughout the book! It would also be an excellent option for storytelling: https://goo.gl/ezU8bo #UCFLAE3414SU17

DrSpalding I agree! A student has performed this one in the past! I think there is a picture on the wiki page I sent today! 7y
DrSpalding ❤️ Etsy but you could try to make your own with the stiff felt at Hobby Lobby or another craft store!🙂 7y

This book is a collection of biographies of "American women who changed the world". I love that the author included some lesser known women such as Nellie Bly and Maria Tallchief. It can be read aloud as a whole book or you can read about one particular woman that may be relevant to a specific lesson. Definitely a must have in a classroom library. It's also available in Spanish: https://goo.gl/p2y2F7 #UCFLAE3414SU17

DrSpalding Wonderful post for a wonderful 2017 book! Books written in other languages are valuable additions to your classroom library!📚 7y

In this B picture book, the author tells about the life of Dr. MLK Jr. using some of his most famous quotes. The illustrations in this book are gorgeous and really help to paint the picture of his life. Definitely a must read when covering the Civil Rights Movement and Black History Month. For a version students can listen to while they look at the book, you can go here: https://youtu.be/Rc39Ka8ut6k #UCFLAE3414SU17

One of my favorite HF young adult novels! The detailed descriptions in this book will have you feeling like you're involved in the journey. While the story is entertaining, it also teaches about what it might have been like to be a pioneer family traveling west into the unknown land occupied by Native Americans. You can find some lesson plan ideas that incorporate almost every subject here: https://goo.gl/5Brrn2 #UCFLAE3414SU17

DrSpalding This is a classic and they now have a children's literature award to honor Wilder! Well done! 7y

Excellent F novel, especially for animal lovers! I loved the writing style of the author and who doesn't love a happy ending? This would be an excellent choice to read aloud in class because the chapters are very short, leaving lots of places to stop and discuss. Once you read the book, check out some of the author's thoughts in an NPR interview here: http://www.npr.org/2013/06/13/191053327/headline-here #UCFLAE3414SU17

SamanthaPuglisi I'm adding this one to my book list! Such a sad, yet interesting storyline. 7y
DrSpalding This is a beautiful story! I like that you included the author on NPR. Check out the unveiling of a statue to honor the one and only, 🦍 http://www.thenewstribune.com/news/local/article110715997.html 7y

This multiple award winning HF novel was hard to put down. The author's brilliant descriptions took me to another place and time. By the end of the book I felt a connection with the main character, Delphine. Definitely recommend. After you read it, check out this video created by an entire classroom of students who worked together to draw a picture for and summarize each chapter: https://youtu.be/e2TnXXEv5bE #UCFLAE3414SU17

DrSpalding The Newbery class project was an excellent addition to this post. Voice thread is an app that would easily create a project like this in your own classroom. I too enjoyed this book and knowing that the sequel was also an award winner, this would be a great book to use in LCs in your middle grade class! 7y

In this "epic" F novel, Captain Underpants helps to rid Jerome Horwitz Elementary School of alien lunch ladies who turn almost everyone in the school to nerd zombies! The silly scenarios & engaging illustrations will keep you thoroughly entertained. My 6 year old son had me read it to him all the way through in one sitting. Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is currently out in theaters! Trailer: https://youtu.be/2neatR9D_h8 #UCFLAE3414SU17
