This was such a funny children's F book! Of coarse, I love #'s and any chance to include math, but I also love that this story features friendship, saving $ (or things) and something to read on the 💯 day! This page reminded me when I say I'm being home cookies from Publix and half the dozen is missing... Part of a series based on the dog, Rocket. Link to the author's app for all rocket books: http://tadhills.com/rocket/ipad-app #UCFLAE3414su17

DrSpalding Math fun again! If you like squirrels too, check out the Scaredy Squirrel series by Melanie Watt! https://youtu.be/jiWu4_oDaNA 7y
melissaallam @DrSpalding @Ashleywwolfe I have quite a few Scaredy Squirrel books on my bookshelf at home. A great series and most of them include charts and diagrams which helps bring in the science and math aspect as well. 🐿 (edited) 7y

Diana_S Math was and still is my least favorite subject! But if a teacher could make it fun and interesting like with this book I may have had a better time with it! 7y
Ashleywwolfe @melissaallam @DrSpalding oh wow, never heard of that series but if they have so many resources incorporated than they are needed for my growing library! 7y
Chanelamber This seems like a funny book just by the photo you posted! I'll have to check it out.😌 7y
Ashleywwolfe @Chanelamber omg, you have to read it! It was hilarious!! 7y

The Best Teacher Ever | Mercer Mayer
post image
Pickpick

This F book is part of Mercer Mayer's classical Little Critters series. Little critter tries to go above & beyond to show appreciation for his teacher, Miss Kitty, only to have fate destroy his elaborate plans. Underlying theme of understanding, acceptance & sometimes the best gifts are from the heart! Love Mayer's illustrations as well! Link for audio read-aloud: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=i1iVgoGQD38 #UCFLAE3414su17

DrSpalding Fun read aloud! You were inspired by @melissaallam's lovely glog and presentation I assume?🙂 7y
StefanieS I love all the little critters books, I love how you found a YouTube video for a read aloud. 7y
Ashleywwolfe @DrSpalding I was - and I realized I have 8 critter books in my gifted box so I've already began a Mercer Mayer collection! 7y

All I can say is WOW! This NF exposes NCLB/RTTT/charters and all that comes with it. I GOT ADDICTED!Totally off the topic of children's literature but soooo significantly important to myself and everyone that is working in education, had to share! #UCFLAE3414su17

DrSpalding Love those sticky notes! Tell us two surprising facts from this book @Ashleywwolfe! 7y

A fabulous F book that comes from the award winning Kevin Henkes. Awesome vocabulary options, good lessons and themes featured (everyone has bad days) and promotes how being a teacher is rewarding & fun! Would be great as an interactive read or reading theater option. The author's website has a plethora of text supplements but my favorites are separated by each mouse character- Lilly's: http://www.kevinhenkes.com/book/lilly/ #UCFLAE3414su17

DrSpalding I am impressed once again @Ashleywwolfe Wonderful post and excellent resource! MATH - money 💰 integration! 7y
Ashleywwolfe @DrSpalding - thank you!! My husband, the engineer, is always looking if I incorporated #'s! Hahaha! 7y

This TL folktale is extremely interesting & it begins with NF background on the Quileute tribe for background & pre-reading. The illustrations are great ESOL and UDL support & the book includes teacher support comprehension/think-compare questions & literary circle activities. Perfect to incorporate social sciences into reading! A site with more folklore info for text support: http://www.native-languages.org/quileute-legends.htm #UCFLAE3414su17

DrSpalding @Ashleywwolfe this multicultural title meets many of our UCF Cultural Competencies. Check out: https://diversity.ucf.edu/files/2015/06/Performance-Standards-for-UCFs-Cultural-... 7y
Ashleywwolfe @DrSpalding yessss!! This is part of my "personal library" so I need to make sure I mark that in the cover on a sticky ;) 7y

Mehso-so

A NF compilation of ranching history that breaks down the alphabet with expansion on culture, history and vocabulary. Some Spanish intermixed for UDL & ESOL! Kinda dry in content but a great support text for other subjects & features loads of vocab options for expansion.Recommend having but wouldn't do a full read-aloud unless older elementary (snooze alert!).Audio reading to support text: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=b688DlPNtGc #UCFLAE3414su17

DrSpalding Wonderful audio to accompany the book! You have such voice in your posts! Well done. 🤠 7y

Fabulous NF option for young readers! Illustrations are great & though published in '92, is still relevant! Gets scientific & could be used to integrate a community project or in class activity like composting. The facts @ the end called "can you believe" are enlightening to say the least. A great unit idea based on World Recycling Day that includes vocab/other texts:https://www.monroecounty.gov/p/des-AmericaRecycleTeacherBook.pdf #UCFLAE3414su17

DrSpalding Gibbons is an excellent non-fiction author. This aligns with second grade science standards. Nice resource to accompany a well written post. 7y
Angiepuc That's awesome, you combine science with this book and mix the two with teaching the importance of recycling and keeping our earth safe! 7y

Low fantasy & perfect for the Harry Potter fans (but creepier). Middle school/older elementary (if approved) read. Heroine Seraphina on a quest through The Biltmore gives you American history context mixed with magic! First in a series, would be awesome for lit circles or a class project. Combine with searching about Asheville history for full context. REAL CLASSROOMS USE: http://robert-beatty.com/serafina-in-the-classroom-photos/ #UCFLAE3414su17

DrSpalding This sounds fantastic. Having visited the Biltmore, I would enjoy reading this book. 7y
Ashleywwolfe @DrSpalding - now hearing some of your favorites, I'm so glad you stacked this, I think you would really enjoy the book and it's series 7y

Interesting RF book! The layout in poetic tone gives a voice to the characters & envelopes the African American culture. Sad ending but great theme; I think older elementary/middle school boys can relate and awesome vocab opportunities! An amazing unit project with differentiated assessments by TeachersPayTeachers:https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/The-Crossover-by-Kwame-Alexander-Novel-Study-Project-Choice-Board-2495278# #UCFLAE3414su17

DrSpalding It is an excellent choice for a novel study and I agree with the audience you noted. Sounds like you enjoyed this one. Consider using it in your own classroom. 7y
Diana_S I am currently reading this and I agree completely, this book is wonderfully done and I know if I love it, a classroom would love to read and relate to this. 7y
Elizabethhunt96 I would definitely want to use this in a classroom. It offers a perspective from an African American boy, which is fantastic! Sounds like a great read for older students! 7y
Ashleywwolfe @Diana_S @Elizabethhunt96 thank you! Should be in everyone's stack! 7y
StefanieS I completely fell in love with this book. Such an easy read, but the author kept everyone engaged. You can always use this story as an option for group reading. 7y

Just read this RF novel in 3 days because of the addictive rhetoric, descriptive voices of each character and the plot. I laughed and cried through this book. Great for a class read that has an amazing theme of inclusiveness. I hope I see this in classrooms for many years to come! It's being made into a movie for a great comparison project. Hope they do this book justice. (trailer) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=u2soKNPRALc #UCFLAE3414su17

SamanthaPuglisi This is definitely on my must read list!! I know it will be emotional but I think it's important to discuss topics like the ones in the book and literature is a great vessel to use to get the conversations going. 7y
DrSpalding I truly hope they do this book justice too! Excellent post! I can't wait to compare the movie and book! 🎥 📚 7y

A non-fiction biography(B) of famous women who persisted gender/racial inequality to achieve success: Sonia Sotomayor, Oprah Winfrey, Sally Ride, & Helen Keller are just a few featured. I ❤️ the mix of historic & modern to inspire a new generation of strong women! Spanish version for multilingual classrooms:http://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/565740/ella-persistio-by-chelsea-clinton-illustrated-by-alexandra-boiger/9780525514947 #UCFLAE3414su17

Jerricajay I can't wait to get my hands on this book! I love the idea of exposing students to and honoring women from history who have greatly impacted our world. I also love that you found a Spanish version of the book. 7y
DrSpalding I am very impressed by your posts. Fabulous to find the Spanish version of this new text. I too think it is a valuable addition to your classroom library to expose and inspire the next generation of young ladies. 7y
Ashleywwolfe @DrSpalding thank you! I'm really lea omg towards ESOL instruction so I am trying to find as many books like this as possible 7y

Pickpick

This modern fantasy(F) incorporates Spanish phrases and culture, an underlying theme of being true to who you are, & features a great deal of humor as Skippyjon Jones thinks he's a chihuahua rather than a Siamese cat. The series (18 books) is great for cultural diversity and offers audio books for EL support! Fabulous read aloud activity including acting and props:http://www.skippyjonjones.com/downloads/Skippyjon-ReadersTheater.pdf #UCFLAE3414su17

melissaallam This sounds like it would be an awesome book to read if you have Spanish speaking students in your classroom. They'd probably appreciate you incorporating their native language into a lesson! 7y
DrSpalding Wow, I had no idea she had already written 18 in the series. I read SkippyJon Jones Mummy Trouble to my niece this weekend. She has the plush character and loves the stories. Yes @melissaallam stories with vocabulary from other languages or written in other languages are excellent additions to your classroom library. 7y
Ashleywwolfe @DrSpalding - the plush!?! Ohhh need that for my "reading buddy bin" I'm creating! 7y
DrSpalding I ❤️ the idea of the reading buddy bin! Woo hoo! 7y
