Pickpick

I had to take most of the day to digest this. The way the author describes Lale's experiences makes you feel his pain in a visceral way. It was a highly impactful read, and I'm looking forward to reading the related Cilka's Journey soon.

Holy moly, I knew this would be an intense read...but this is making me nauseous in a "this is horrific but you NEED to know it" kind of way. I had to put it down to start my work day, but I'm itching to get back to it.

Kaylamburson I just got a copy of it yesterday. But that is also why I love and hate books about difficult times in history. 4y
lindsay_ann @Kaylamburson I honestly basically grew up under a rock (my friends joke that I'm Kimmy from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), so I've been working to become a more informed individual. I spent a few weeks in Berlin, and was so struck by what learned about the Holocaust during my time there, so I immediately went on to Libby and put a hold on this book. It's chilling, but so important to learn about. 4y
Kaylamburson It's so gutting when you hear about all of these horrendous truths. I'm so glad that you took the next step to learn more and there are soooooo many books about the Holocaust. @Insightsintobooks actually just posted a bunch on her page yesterday that you might want to check out! 4y

lindsay_ann @Kaylamburson Thank you, I'll check that out now! 4y
LinesUponAPage You are right it is so chilling. The things we could only imagine had to be even worse that our brains can fathom. Just wait to read the continuation of one of the back characters- Cilka- in Cilka‘s Journey. I felt worse and hopeful at the same time. It‘s good to become informed I think we should all do more of that. I believe it makes us more empathetic to people. 4y
Kaylamburson But also, it's crazy how many horrors have happened in our own backyard or are still happening. I just finished reading Damnation Island which is about the history of Roosevelt Island in NYC and so many mentally ill, poor, and jailed were treated terribly. 4y
Kaylamburson I totally agree, @Lifeisasnap ! Great point. 4y
lindsay_ann @Lifeisasnap I'm adding that one to my list now. And I completely agree - I feel like the more you know about others' experiences, the more you feel for others, which is so crucial. 4y
LinesUponAPage I‘ve been reviewing books for #netgalley and it seems ALL the books I‘ve read lately are WWII related. The best, besides the Tattooist of Auschwitz and Cilka‘s Journey, has been about the network that saved Jewish children from the Nazi‘s it was amazing what one woman could do and she saved thousands. Brave people like that inspire me. It‘s called, The Last Train to London by Meg Waite Clayton. I recommend it highly! 4y
lindsay_ann @Lifeisasnap Thank you, I'll check that one out as well!! 4y

Born a Crime | Trevor Noah

Pickpick

I personally love Trevor Noah in general. But you don't have to agree with his viewpoints or even like him at all to respect the hell out of him. This book was so well-written, impactful, and educational. I woke up early this morning so that I could finish it - and I'm NOT a morning person!

Kaylamburson Oh, you're new to Litsy! Welcome welcome welcome!! I hope you love it here!! #litsywelcomewagon @LitsyWelcomeWagon here's a few fantastic Littens you might want to follow: @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @MrBook @swishandflick @ScientistSam @Sace 4y
