panThis book had such an interesting concept - a matriarchy after a virus wipes out men - but unfortunately it wasn't fully realised. The world felt half built and too reminiscent of a patriarchal world. And a lot of the concepts felt a little stereotypical and clichéd. I enjoyed the read but it wasn't particularly original or thought-provoking.
pickThe Jungle tells the tale of a young boy named Mico in a Calais refugee camp. Pooja Puri manages to tell this tale of a devastating place and situation with a necessary light and hopefulness, without sacrificing realism. The balance of optimism and dark in this book is absolutely perfect. The characters are vibrant, engaging, and fully fleshed out. I loved both Mica and Leila. I would recommend The Jungle to anyone looking for an engaging read.

pickA wonderfully disturbing book. A bit slow at the start but totally worth the read.
When the book you're reading is talking about the show you're OBSESSED with
pickI was a little hesitant going into this book because I've had such bad experiences with books that are lauded for their "feminism" but end up with lots of thinly veiled racism,transphobia etc.
Shrill is careful not to attach itself to any of these things. Better yet she's critical of the comedy that "punches down" aka. makes use of those minority voices for a cheap laugh.
A thoughtful and poignant book that also manages to be pretty hilarious!
There's so many good points in this book so far. She mixes the comedic and the serious in a pretty incredible way.
