Love Warrior: A Memoir | Glennon Doyle Melton
Pickpick

I almost certainly dehydrated myself reading this book, as Glennon's words resonated quite strongly with my own experiences. I thoroughly appreciated her unapologetic storytelling.

I have now finished all of Howe's current works, ending with this selection. After spending so much time in Massachusetts, it was wonderful to have a change of both location and time in New York. The story was carefully written and extremely enjoyable.

Here's to Us | Elin Hilderbrand
Pickpick

I love when Elin writes about food. It's her at her best. This didn't top my favorite book, The Blue Bistro, but it is an enjoyable read.

Annihilation | Jeff VanderMeer
Pickpick

Excellent mix of what you would expect from a Stephen King/Michael Crichton-type mashup. Vandermeer is an expert in the genre and it shows.

The Dinner | Herman Koch
Pickpick

Disturbing read, but incredibly well done. Excellent piece highlighting how ambivalent and self-serving society has become. The sociopathic tone could have been heavy handed, but wasn't, which allowed it to be appropriately jarring.

Barefoot: A Novel | Elin Hilderbrand
Pickpick

This is my second favorite Hilderbrand book, next to Blue Bistro. Fabulous beach read without losing quality of writing or depth of characters. Textbook for the genre.

The Blue Bistro | Elin Hilderbrand
Pickpick

This is my favorite Elin book to date and I've read all of them. She's a talented writer, the best for beach reads, and this is always my first recommendation for people looking to start her books.

msrowse I saw her books at the library--I'll have to grab one next time I'm there! 8y

Solid first installment of a series. I guessed the ending about halfway through, but the writing was so tight I didn't care.

I normally relax my criticism for beach reads, but this was poorly written. The writing was stunted and felt like I was reading a collection of notes about a book instead of a fluid narrative.

The Book of Life | Deborah Harkness
Pickpick

This was much better than the second book. Attention to detail remained a strong suit. I enjoyed the new characters more than I normally would in the last book in a trilogy.

I didn't like the second installment nearly as much as the first. The time walking was a little long in the tooth.

I normally avoid anything that includes vampires, so I was cautiously optimistic with this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it! Quite well written and I plan on reading it again in a few years.

One Kick | Chelsea Cain
Pickpick

I love, love Cain's writing. I was happy to take a break from Archie to meet Kick. Really enjoyed it.
