“I told myself that if my eyes were not so big or my nose smaller,if I were not so large or my hair straighter, the Mehtas would be kinder.”

I think this story is wonderful. But I do believe it would be difficult for some readers who have little to no background on the subject. It includes numerous places and words that are not in English and without knowledge of could be confusing to readers.

Homeless Bird by Gloria Whelan was published in 2000 and is a national book award winner. This story is a chapter book that follows the life of a 13 year old girl, Koly. She is married at 13 to a very sick boy for her dowry to be able to send him to the Ganges river in India to heal him. Unfortunately he dies and she is left a widow at 13, very undesirable in her culture. The story unfolds as she finds herself and what to do for herself.

This story is great for young girls who are interested in inventing and stem. I really loved the illustrations that highlight her life.

This story published in 2019 highlights the double life of Hedy Lamarr. She was both an actress and inventor. The story includes quotes from Hedy‘a life that highlight her own beliefs in her work. It not only talks about her life in Hollywood but also her life in Austria where she was born.

“Most doors were closed to her because she was Black and she was a woman. Plus, she was very short!”

The story is wonderful for learning about important leaders that are not highlighted otherwise.

Written by Katheryn Russel-Brown and illustrated by Eric Velasquez, this book is about Shirley Chisholm. It was published in 2020 and highlights the life of Shirley and the many firsts she accomplished. She used her voice to speak up for people who had little to no voice. It talks about her trailblazing career in politics and her as an overall person. I think it is a great read for children learning about pivotal leaders.

Wonderful illustrations

This story is the story of Venus and Serena Williams. It speaks about their family and their perseverance when climbing to the top. It talks about the impact of their father and how hard they worked.

I love the illustrations.

This book talks about the segregation of black students in Arkansas. It speaks on how black communities came together to learn.

This book highlights the life of Sharice David‘s. A native woman who ran for congress and was the first Native American woman who was a congressman for Kansas. A good read.

It speaks on the life and death of Martin Luther King Jr. It is a beautifully illustrated book that shows how words can be extremely powerful. It speaks on the importance of equality. An amazing read.

I feel like this biography is a bit too information packed a bit too long for me.

Published in 2013, this story describes the life of Horace Pippin. It shows how he overcame hardships that allowed him to grow and continue to paint after he was injured in world war 1. He is a great inspiration. This story taught me much about Horace Pippin.

The illustrations are not only vibrant, but depict the emotions of Nelson so very well

Published in 2013 this story highlights the life of Nelson Mandela. He fought for freedom and desegregation of South Africa. He was prisoned again and again and never gave up. Nelson Mandela is a great role model and leader, I think this story was great. The illustrations were also beautiful.

I really love how this not only highlights the achievements of Bruce but also his hardships.

This story was published in 2019 and the illustrations are pencil and digitally colored. The story high lights Bruce Lee‘s life and how he not only was from China but was born in San Francisco. It highly lights his important moments but also some of his flaws. I think it was a great representation of a biography.

I really like the fluidity and humor in this book

This book is all about geology and what it means. It explains how rocks are not just geology but geology is the study of what the Earth is made of. It showcases the many different types of rocks and how they are made.

I like how it explores all of Helen‘s life not just her achievements.

This book published in 2022 showcases Hellen Keller‘s life using mixed media. This book includes a fact about j#hellen on each page and explores the achievements she had throughout their life.

Published in 2013 this book highlights the use of collage in its illustrations. It talks about the parrots in Puerto Rico.

The medium is beautiful.

This nonfiction book speaks about the pond. There are many different animals that live there. The medium used is mixed media. This story explores so many different animals in a pond and how they interact. I really like it but I think it would be difficult for children to read.

I really like how the pages are dark to capture the reader in a dark environment like the giant squid.
