How to Be an Antiracist | Ibram X. Kendi
post image
Pickpick

This is such a great book on understanding racism. Kendi walks us through how we relate to one another and really gets at the core of racist policies. I feel better equipped on what steps I can take to determine and support anti-racist policies.

I love some good cryptozoology. The telling of the story through journals and interviews enhances the eeriness. This was a fun, and suspenseful, gory summer read. The research Brooks does is my favorite part of his books. The last couple of chapters were a 5/5.

We need more coming of age books featuring characters curious about the natural world. It is beautifully written.

At first, I was a little put off by the author (male) and every interviewee (mostly male) about their perspective of Elizabeth Holmes and the events surrounding Theranos in Bad Blood. However, it became pretty clear that she was the problem. There might've been some biases and sexism, but that had nothing to do with her decisions and deceit. ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet my first space opera and it did not disappoint. The Wayfarer crew is made up of all different species with special skill sets that allow them to create wormhole tunnels through which other ships can then travel through space. It's a fun adventure, but the relationships and characters are what I found most interesting. ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

A couple of months ago I watched Guy Winch's TED talk. His research combined with over 20 years of working with patients made it clear that the coping mechanism our brain uses for other types of hardships is actually harmful when dealing with romantic heartbreak or a loss of a pet. I highly recommend his TED talk or this book if you're hurting. My 13 yr old Scotty passed away this week and I reread it to help my broken heart. 💔🐾 ⭐⭐⭐/5

Educated: A Memoir | Tara Westover
post image
Pickpick

I listened to the bulk of Educated on the plane home from Hawaii. In the middle of the Pacific Ocean I became, well, lost in Tara's world. Some people and situations brought back memories that I'd tucked away. However, I'm glad I read it. It's a beautiful memoir. It felt as though Tara put my thoughts to paper and eloquently articulated my own journey. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

Lincoln in the Bardo | George Saunders

Lincoln in the Bardo was unlike any narrative I‘ve ever read. The weaving of eye witness accounts and fictional dialog from the dead about Lincoln and the loss of his son was intriguing. There were multiple themes dealing with life, death, civil war, racism, denial, and depression that unraveled the story quickly. ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

A fun, slightly gory, supernatural thriller. From the creators of Welcome to Night Vale. Need I say more? ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5.
