This is a great start to a new to me series.

Prince of Thorns | Mark Lawrence
post image

Prince of Thorns is written in the first-person, which is something of a challenge for any author in terms of the complex narratives associated with fantasy.

Secondly, it doesn't pull any punches when it comes to involving the young hero in traumatizing activities. Both factors make for a distinctive reading experience.

Anti-heroes are my favorite character trope! And the one that started it all was Jorg from Prince of Thorns!

lirahlu I love anti-heroes. One of my favorites is Baz from Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. He tries so hard to be bad but always does the right thing 8mo
TheSpineView Thanks for playing! 8mo
BehindthePages @lirahlu I'll have to check that one out! 8mo

This was my choice for #TurnUptheBooks, but I've still decided to DNF it. I've already had my problems with volume one, but thought I'd give the second book a shot, too. Then it spent years on my TBR... Now I know why. So I kicked it off my list, volume three as well, and another book the same author as well. TBR cleaned out. I just couldn't get into the story at all, and felt bored from the start...

I wanted to do both books for the #Roll100 this month, but Wifey sabotaged that plan by gifting me some real big books - so still only one book in March 😅

For #TurnUptheBooks I got the song Thrine by Bring Me The Horizon. After a night thinking about something else than werewolves, I came along the tagged book (actually, while checking for the #Roll100 book). It was so fitting, I almost couldn't believe it.

PuddleJumper Being Me The Horizon! Wow. I need to go listen to them again, haven't heard that name since uni 9mo
Jari-chan @PuddleJumper Cool, you know them! Do you have a favourite song? 9mo
PuddleJumper @Jari-chan Been ages since I've listened to them. Looks like I mostly listened to the That's The Spirit album. I'll have to add them into my Spotify rotation again 9mo
Jari-chan @PuddleJumper I'm so going to check this out - Thank you 😊 9mo

I have 2 kittens now - 4 months old. They bring me calm and since I obviously can't move, I started a new book.

The Liar's Key | Mark Lawrence

🎧 Book 2 of The Red Queen‘s War.

The continuing story of an unlikely friendship between morally gray Prince Jalan & a Viking named Snorri.

I think of them as DeadPool & Thor 😆

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️+ 👇🏻

Twainy Well the book picks up after their last hilarious near-death adventure with them in possession of Loki‘s key! It opens all doors. Snorri wants to open Death‘s door to retrieve his wife & child.

So many crazy situations! The key reminds me of a certain ring.

I laughed out loud multiple times!

It‘s dark. It‘s sarcastic. It‘s fun & hilarious! My kind of fantasy! I wish all fantasy books were this much fun!

I did not enjoy this quite as much as the first. I suppose Mark Lawrence is setting us up for the finale, but the story seemed a bit drawn out. Still, the witty humor kept me turning the page and that ending was definitely worth the wait! I have very high expectations of book 3.

🎧 Nine year old prince Jorg sees horrors committed to his mom & brother but can‘t help due to “thorns”. He then watches his father not retaliate for economical reasons.

Prince Jorg leaves, joins a band of shady miscreants vowing to return with a vengeance. He thinks about & commits horrible crimes and by 13 he‘s the head of the criminals & his story takes a return.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👇🏻

Twainy The book was a bit slow but by halfway it picks up speed & becomes a page turner.

What got me on board was that the author drops the bomb that this story takes place in a post apocalyptic Europe! LOVE IT!

TrishB I loved the series. The post apocalyptic bit becomes even more relevant. 1y
Twainy @TrishB I‘m so glad! I read so many books this month and this was one of the ones I‘m still thinking about. 1y
