So here I am again, waiting for a hurricane and sitting in bed listening to the rain and reading. Here‘s my hurricane-waiting reading. I hope to finish Cultish today and at least get started on The Personal Librarian and The Sound of the Sea. Our 37th anniversary is Tuesday, and it seems like nature often sees fit to send us hurricanes for anniversary gifts. I wish it would stop doing so!

Jas16 I hope that you stay safe. 3y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm That‘s very rude of nature! In all seriousness, I hope you stay safe and can ride out the storm without any damage. ❤️ 3y
KathyWheeler @Jas16 Thank you. So far, it looks like all were going to get is even more rain than usual, thunderstorms, and flash flooding. 3y

KathyWheeler @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Very rude! 😄 Thanks. 3y
Reggie I hope your‘e doing ok, Kathy. And that the worst thing that happens is you get annoyed by some characters in a book. 3y
KathyWheeler @Reggie That made me laugh. 😄. So far we‘re fine. Tomorrow we‘re supposed to get a lot of potential tornados, which I hate. 3y

This book about shells is really more a book about humans and our relation to shells. Rather than a single narrative, it is closer to a series of essays tightly held around the theme of shells and exploring history, anthropology, and science. Once I recognized the essay-like format, I liked it a lot, but struggled a bit before that. Really interesting!

TheAromaofBooks Oh this sounds a little like another book I loved 3y
Hooked_on_books @TheAromaofBooks That one gets referenced several times in this one! 3y
Centique What amazing shells you have too! 3y
Hooked_on_books @Centique Thanks! The previous owner of my house left them behind. I‘d love to know more about them, but I‘ll never quite know where they came from. 3y

While I tend not to be pro-assassination, this is nonetheless a pretty brilliant idea. (“The queens” refers to the Queen conch.)

TheBookHippie @tracey38 one of my favorite places on earth ..west coast oceanside🌊 3y
AmyG Lovely. My favorite west coast ocean place is Carmel, CA. I want to live in one of the little “hobbit houses” on the beach. ❤️ 3y

ImperfectCJ My favorite ocean! I'm so grateful to be living just a few miles from it again. Beautiful photo! 3y
TheBookHippie @ImperfectCJ I prefer San Francisco as a city -but Coronado Beach is my favorite 🌊 (edited) 3y
ImperfectCJ @TheBookHippie I've lived in the Bay Area, Monterey, and San Diego, but San Diego is the city that has my heart, although even it is changing, and it's not clear yet if it's for the better. California is a place of extremes, easy to love but there are so many ways it can swallow a person up. I suspect the danger is part of the appeal, for CA and maybe all of the American West. (Apologies...I'm feeling philosophical about CA today.) 3y
TheBookHippie @ImperfectCJ I generally arrive last week of March until April. Imperial Beach is a fun beach too. I agree about CA. But I love it so. 3y

For many this book might seem dry, but I personally loved it. It was full of so much fascinating information about seashells and their use in our history, both past and present.

I took my time reading this one so that I could absorb all the well-researched details. However, if the ocean and seashells do not interest you, this one might not be for you.
