Seabiscuit: An American Legend | Laura Hillenbrand

Pickpick

I‘m participating in a readathon that required a book involving a sport. This has been on my tbr for a bit so I decided to get it off my list. Very well researched and dramatically told.

Tamra I really enjoyed this one! I didn‘t realize until after I had read it long it takes her to research & write due to chronic illness. 5mo

TheAromaofBooks I have been meaning to read this book for quite some time - I was huge reader of horse books growing up and found Seabiscuit's story fascinating. Can't wait to hear how you like it!! 1y
Singout Written entirely in bed by an author who has myalgic encephalomyelitis, as I have had since 2008. 1y
GinaKButler @TheAromaofBooks I really enjoyed this one! Definitely add it to your list! 1y
GinaKButler @Singout Just incredible. I really liked Unbroken, also. I think I heard that she‘s working on a new book. 1y
TheAromaofBooks Good to know!!! 1y

The story was good. Horse racing is dangerous and I do not like using animals for human entertainment. This didn‘t help my opinion. The author mostly focused on the danger for the jockeys, but those same dangers go for the horses. But the human jockeys choose to do what they do, knowing the dangers. I was surprised to learn how much those jockeys mistreat their own bodies in order to race. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin Hillenbrand is a very good writer and the descriptions of the races were exciting. I was cheering Seabiscuit on. 2y

Kids love when I tell them our read-aloud is a true story. They are fascinated by history when presented by authors like Meghan McCarthy. It's sad how quickly they lose interest in history because of school. #picturebooksareeverybodybooks #kidlit #istillhaven'tseenthemovie #thebookwasbetter

Nov - Dec 2020 (audiobook)
I felt this was a bit clunky. The story of the ugly, underdog racehorse that becomes the best is very familiar - well, to our family who regularly visit Phar Lap at the Melbourne Museum. The narrator‘s accent was grating. And whilst we were all cheering for Sea Biscuit, the ending was predictable - if he hadn‘t won, there would not have been a story to tell.
Finishing does mean we can now watch the movie though!

Day 15 of a book from my shelves with random thoughts - I have always loved C.W. Anderson, ever since Billy & Blaze days! His stories and wonderful illustrations have always appealed to me. I can't tell you how many times I checked this book out of the library when I was growing up - I can still remember where its spot was on the shelf!! For someone who has never been to a horse race, I definitely knew a lot about them when I was younger! 😂

Leftcoastzen You have it too! Yay!👏 4y
TheAromaofBooks I have a few Anderson books to post over the next couple of days!!! But this was the one I remember reading the most when I was growing up, so I was excited when I saw you post a picture of it the other day!! 4y

Great book! I didn't care about horse racing before reading this book but I'm a huge fan of Unbroken and read it just because Laura Hillenbrand is an amazing writer. In the end I too fell in love with Seabiscuit and had my heart in all the races as Hillenbrand so magically depicted them.
