so-so3 🌟 Eh. I love to swim, and I probably felt exactly like this child when I was young and in the water. But it just felt flat. The book tries at time to rhyme or to have a cadence, but frequently fails. It uses long lists of synonyms to get a point across that could be done with one word. Just not for me.
“You know that little piece of land across the brook that runs up between our farm and Mr. Barry's. It belongs to Mr. William Bell, and right in the corner there is a little ring of white birch trees—the most romantic spot, Marilla. Diana and I have our playhouse there. We call it Idlewild. pickSo beautifully written that it‘s almost poetry. A coming of age story that reads like a memoir.
This is a heartbreaking glimpse into life for a young Aboriginal girl, growing up searching for her family, her connection to country, her Aboriginal identity.

pickBooks read in December. Quite reflective of my overall 2020 reading as well
pickSwallow The Air was Tara June Winch‘s debut novel in 2006 (this copy is a very lovely new edition which I believe was released this year). The writing is incredible, particularly for a debut. Having already read The Yield, I could definitely see how her writing has developed even further and am just in awe of her skills. Swallow the Air is poetic and lyrical, while examining sad and hard truths. Heartbreaking yet hopeful read.
