This was an important book for me as a child. One of the few books with a “Native American“ storyline, and my childhood self understood the rarity.

While not from my ancestral tribes, this was a story from my ancestral world. I loved this story and would spend untold hours studying the illustrations.

Just reread this, and the story is still as profound to me today as it had been all those many years ago. I've fallen in love all over again. 👇

AnnCrystal The following is unrelated to this book, yet equally aligned with my childhood obsession of horses because of this book.

Was raised to know that there was a breed of horse “already here“ in the Americas. My mom told me this as a little girl, and I continued to believe even when I later read otherwise. 👇

AnnCrystal Now articles about this fact are being reported, about the survival of the original horse breed from before these lands were known as the Americas.

While I love all breeds of horses 🐴💝🐎, this is just absolutely fantastically epic!

Like @Centique said, this is not my favorite of the Love Medicine novels. Many characters are difficult to love, and there is less humor and more relentless depression. But I did love Fleur‘s final act. And I think I know what happened with Lipsha, but would love to discuss with anyone else who has read this. Number 10 for #24in2024 @Jas16

Jas16 Still haven‘t read this one. I need to. 2w
Centique Im glad someone else has read this book! Whats your theory about Lipsha? 2w
Lcsmcat @Centique I‘m wondering if she meant us to think he got away with it by being perceived as his father‘s hostage. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w
Centique @Lcsmcat oh i like that theory. I was wondering if theyd all died because he saw his mothers ghost again - but i much prefer thinking he got out of there 2w

Mean Spirit is better!! Or maybe, I can suggest that if you liked/appreciated Grann‘s NF book: Killers of the Flower Moon, you must please seek out Mean Spirit to get a fabulously told story with heart & grit with the Indigenous Peoples perspective.

(In further study, FYI, Hogan was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize with Mean Spirit.)

Liz_M I read this years ago, well before Killers of the Flower Moon was a thing. Eye opening and well written! 4w
BkClubCare @Liz_M - thank you for your comment. I was introduced to this title when the movie for Flower Moon was being discussed somewhere online 😉 and was said to be BETTER. I am looking forward to it. 4w

Of all the presents I received from my dad on Christmas, this was the one I was most excited about. It is a children‘s book that tells the life story of Sitting Bull. My dad was so upset that he accidentally bought me a children‘s book, but this was the perfect way to peak my interest into a new reading subject. The book is stunning, with photographs and drawings covering each page. And it was written in a wonderfully beautiful and engaging way.
