Hip-Hop Is History | Questlove
post image
Mehso-so

The history of hip hop, dissected by one of the greats. All the big rappers are here, as are some of the less famous but equally important. At times, I had no idea who Questlove was talking about. I guess that‘s the point. Quest tried to make this friendly for those of us who may not follow hip hop music in depth, but it is clearly hard being a genius and trying to dumb it down for us plebeians.

I had fallen a couple of days behind in my listening of this book, and listened to yesterday‘s piece today

That felt a little serendipitous. I saw Moonrise Kingdom directed by Wes Anderson yesterday. Benjamin Britten is mentioned several times and when the music is shown at the end, several of his pieces had been used. Life works in mysterious ways sometimes

Librarybelle I loved how this happened sometimes during the year I did this—how I‘d listen to a piece and then hear more about it within a week of listening to it. So many wonderful connections to the pieces she discusses! 1w

@WildAlaskaBibliophile usually crank the 80s and 90s country hits during road trips, and this weekend we spent Saturday in Homer. A song from this album popped up. This was an early favorite of mine; I grew up with country music from my mom and classic rock from my dad. This was one of the early country-pop crossover hits, but I think it was well-balanced. https://youtu.be/hU0nP9dcI_w

I can honestly say this is the first string quartet with didgeridoo I‘ve ever heard. And the first Sculthorpe. Not really good for “background music at work” today, what with the barking and all. 😀

Today‘s piece from Year of Wonder was both mesmerizing & haunting.

https://youtu.be/KVZcW0Wt2wY

Loanne The Year of Wonder is such a lovely book. My husband and I did the whole year one day at a time. We would read the daily selection while our coffee was brewing and then listen to the music with coffee in hand. Very pleasant. Learned a lot particularly about women composers and those who were persecuted. Didn‘t love every piece of music but found many more to add to my classical playlist. A+ 3mo

Loved the Kyrie this morning! Although I can‘t say the same for Ockeghem‘s hat. 😂 @AnnCecilie @kspenmoll

quietlycuriouskate I listened to the whole album the track came from. I do NOT want the whole outfit that hat belongs with! 4mo
