Go Tell It on the Mountain | James A Baldwin
post image

October 9 & 10. Day 9 & 10. “Folks can change their ways as much as they want to. But I don‘t care how many times you change your ways, what‘s in you is in you, and it‘s got to come out.” -James Baldwin, Go Tell It on the Mountain Mr. Baldwin, I love you for simply being you! I liked this dive into Baldwin's work around the civil rights movement and the comparison of attitudes then to now during the Trump era.
One picky issue I had was the author would occasionally refer to Baldwin as Jimmy. It felt a bit too personal and out of place.

A good book. Baldwin tells his personal story- his early childhood, living abroad, and personal relationships and work within the civil rights movement. He talks a lot about MLK and Malcolm X (their relationships and responses to their deaths). Overall a good read.

It took awhile but Libby finally came through with Glaude‘s book on Baldwin. This was a fascinating listen, providing greater detail on his life, on his novels, on his evolution in thinking about what needed to be done or even what could be done to deal with racism. The last chapter included Glaude‘s powerful report on visiting Montgomery and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, https://museumandmemorial.eji.org/memorial

Graywacke Glad Libby came through. 🙂 More so, glad you enjoyed. It‘s such a great book to spend time with. And the audio was terrific, no? 3y
Suet624 @Graywacke YES! I‘m not a big audio fan but I think that was the best way for me to absorb that book. 3y

Only finished two of James Baldwin‘s books this month. I had read two others in the past. The adult children‘s book was a surprise. I have become more and more impressed with James Baldwin‘s talent and heart with each book that I read.

Thank you @Soubhiville for encouraging me to read more of his body of work.

#AuthorAMonth - July - James Baldwin: When considering where to start this rereading venture I recalled an admission made by the author in an interview that I had read awhile back. James Baldwin thought of himself as a poet first, not a novelist, not an essayist. He filled sheets of paper with poems and then later fleshed them out into stories or longer compositions.👇🏽

Nute So last night I started our reacquaintance here, Jimmy‘s Blues, with his poetic voice that strays from the usual rhythmical beats and metaphorical tendencies, instead syncopating with jazz inflections and shifting structure of stanzas, displaying an unrestrained freedom to tell the bitter truth and nature of this world in the ways that he chooses. He‘s blunt, but with requirement for a lesson was needed THEN and, sadly, NOW!
Always recommended!

“For while the tale of how we suffer, and how we are delighted, and how we may triumph is never new, it always must be heard. There isn't any other tale to tell, it's the only light we've got in all this darkness.”

James Baldwin, Sonny's Blues

A poetry collection which addresses themes of race, gender, class, and poverty; Baldwin‘s verse is as engaging as his other works.

#AAM #JamesBaldwin added audio narration to my previous #KindleDeal 💙powerful writing and wonderful narration but such a heavy book😔feels semi autobiographical, which is heartbreaking 💔

Megabooks I‘m listening to my Baldwin as well! 👯‍♀️ 3y
Cinfhen Just finished my Baldwin @Megabooks HEAVY but powerful 😢😭 3y
Megabooks Just finished mine this morning. I‘ll tag it. I had similar feelings to the ones I did with Lorde‘s Sister Outsider. Very sad that only some progress has been made re: structural racism since its writing in 1962. We have so far to go, but at the end he reminded us to dream the impossible!! 3y
