A good opening line is such a treat. A line that grabs you by the shirt and says, “You‘re going to like this.” It‘s like a handful of red licorice nibs or red hots. #greatopeninglines #openingline
You had me at “chocolatey loops.” 😄

"To the as-yet-unborn, to all innocent wisps of undifferentiated nothingness: Watch out for life" Kurt Vonnegut always has killer opening lines! #greatopeninglines #booktober

The Complete Fiction | H. P. Lovecraft

Lovecraft has a lot of #GreatOpeningLines for #booktober.
Dagon: "I am writing this under an appreciable mental strain, since by tonight I shall be no more."
The Cats of Ulthar: "It is said that in Ulthar, which lies beyond the river Skai, no man may kill a cat;"
The Nameless City: "When I drew nigh the nameless city I knew it was accursed."
The Outsider: "Unhappy is he to whom the memories of childhood bring only fear and sadness."

Leniverse The Other Gods: "Atop the tallest of Earth's peaks dwell the gods of Earth, and suffer no man to tell that he hath looked upon them." 6y
Leniverse The Music of Erich Zann: "I have examined maps of the city with the greatest care, yet have never again found the Rue d'Auseil." 6y
Leniverse Herbert West - Reanimator: "Of Herbert West, who was my friend in college and in after life, I can speak only with extreme terror." 6y

Leniverse The Call of Cthulhu: "The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents." 6y
Leniverse The Silver Key: "When Randolph Carter was thirty he lost the key of the gate of dreams." 6y
Leniverse I'll stop soon... ?But first: The Thing on the Doorstep: "It is true that I have sent six bullets through the head of my best friend, and yet I hope to shew by this statement that I am not his murderer." 6y
Leniverse Ok, I think I'm done fangirling over Lovecraft for today. But this book is one of my most priced possessions. ☺️ 6y
Boghunden I've never read any of his works :( I'm so curious about Cthulhu because it's everywhere, but I have no idea what it's a reference to. Where do you recommend that one start with his works? 6y
Leniverse @Boghunden If you go to hplovecraft.com you can find all his work for free digitally. At the Mountains of Madness, which is a novella, is arguably his best known and best crafted. But you might want to start with the short story called "The Call of Cthulhu" as an introduction. My favourites are the Randolph Carter stories, but then I am also a Lord Dunsany fan, and his influence is obvious there. 6y
Boghunden I have a "best of" - book with some of his stories, I'll see if it has these two. Thanks :) 6y

#Booktober #GreatOpeningLines This looks like a children's book, but it really isn't. It's illustrated craziness for grown ups who have retained the wild imagination of their childhood. @RealLifeReading

Boghunden Aww that sounds so good! 6y
