Kallocain | Karin Boye
post image

This little known novel by Swiss author Boye was published between Brave New World & 1984, Kallocain takes its title after the drug which is developed & is named after the creator/narrator. Kallocain will not only compel people to tell the truth, but will reveal their thoughts/feelings. Although I have read other explorations of individuality vs community in dystopians, Boye's poetic & mesmerizing monologues (CONT)

vivastory of those subjected to Kallocain injections & their visions of a better world made this stand out. (edited) 5d

302 pages about a SUV salesman negotiating a worldwide pandemics impacting men's testosterone levels, & therefore their sense of self. Toxic masculinity & avocado (the testicular fruit 😂) consumption on the rise. I found the art hard to follow, & I realised v. quickly that I wasn't the intended audience. Not my type of humour, but its heart is in the right place. It's read now and I can return it.

Avocado tastefully placed to hide a NSFW bit.

About to start this graphic novel about a future where men's testosterone levels drop. Was slightly embarrassed by the cover when the librarian handed the book to me 😅

BarbaraJean 😂😂 There are times when I really appreciate my library‘s setup, where I can walk over to the holds shelf, grab my own books, and check them out at the self-serve kiosks. 😆 1w
Dilara @BarbaraJean I didn't know some libraries had this setup! I'd love that, especially for busy Saturday mornings... We have self-serve kiosks, but holds are kept out patrons' way, behind the librarians' desk...

@Ruthiella 😂 And the back cover is even worse...

Pickpick

As some of you may know, I have a bit of an obsession going on with Australian author Georgia Blain who died prematurely in 2016 😔. This book was one of two published that year. It is YA, specfic about teenager Fern and her Lotto Girl friends. I‘m not a big fan of the genre, so perhaps not the best judge, but I found it to be just an OK read. #ozfiction

Mehso-so

Parts of this were really well thought out and written to keep me thinking. Then it seemed less so. I wonder if this is indicative of it being written as a statement or account.
It has stayed in my mind a lot though... even dreamt about it :/

The Meadows | Stephanie Oakes
Pickpick

The Meadows is set in a future in a country ravaged by climate disaster. A totalitarian government has taken control and has created a society based on homophobia, misogyny, white supremacy and lies. The story follows Eleanor who lives in a small rural, coastal community. The Meadows is powerful and important Sapphic dystopian fiction. The Meadows is well written, immersive and heartbreaking. I liked Eleanor and her journey to self-acceptance.

Pickpick

While this novel started out quite slow, it definitely built itself up into an intriguing tale. Oakes jumps between the two different timelines to tell the story, revealing relevant details and events in a way that creates wonder and a bit of suspense. It was extremely effective at revealing Eleanor‘s journey throughout her time at the Meadows and as an adjudicator, along with those individuals that have played a part in her life.
