Cyclops | Euripides

Pickpick

When I first encountered Polyphemus the Cyclops in The Odyssey, I pretty much felt like he got what was coming to him. Now that I‘m older & wiser 🙃, I was rooting for the one-eyed giant. His monologue in Euripides' rendering, where he rants about the human civilisation, the gods, & his father's shrines, is too funny. In this only extant satyr play from Greek antiquity, the Cyclops is almost a Rabelaisian philosopher. It's short & entertaining.

batsy I read the translation by William Arrowsmith. Image from Wikipedia: "Late Classical terracotta figure depicting Polyphemos reclining while drinking a bowl of wine." 2y
Graywacke (He‘s quite cute in that statue.) Such an appealing review. It sounds like great fun. 2y
batsy @Graywacke He is, isn't he 😂 It's a short one but engaging, & an interesting contrast to the tragedies! 2y
vivastory The Cyclops episode always struck me as the most gruesome in the Odyssey & Odysseus definitely doesn't come off well as he's sailing away listening to him cry out in torment looking for Nobody 2y
batsy @vivastory I agree, actually! The more I think about it now the more miffed I am at Odysseus about the smug cleverness of it all. In this play he also comes off like a snobby school perfect, so it was easy to be #TeamCyclops 😆 2y

Violent, gruesome and yet very intriguing. Holds your interest from minute to minute as the characters try to find a miracle drug and at the same time prove the truth of the Odyssey.

Book #3 in the Gideon Crew series. Well this one took me to unexpected places & things. A little bit thriller, a little bit mystery, a little sci-fi.... very fast paced and while it‘s a little too out there to be real I do enjoy the character & his adventures in social engineering.

Issue #36. Roxxon has purchased an island in the Sea of Japan and sends a team to investigate it. Things go horribly wrong after a betrayal on Monster Island. Meanwhile, the X-Men arrive in Japan just as monsters begin to escape from Monster Island. +11 (team theme book/post) for #TeamStoker #scarathlon

Adorable book about a very unmannered cake who learns about social graces when mistaken by cyclopes for a dancing hat. I'm not even sure what I like so much about this one. It just makes me laugh out loud (in spite of the incorrect pluralization of "cyclops").

Strange, but funny. Who would have thought that cakes would be so rude? And that monsters like little hats shaped like cakes? And fun, non-preachy way to teach manners.

This was really good. Having watched the movies before reading the books, the ending of this one was completely new to me. My favorite part though was how amazing Tyson was throughout this entire quest. Cyclops love 🙌 Definitely looking forward to book 3 in the near future.
