A vivid portrayal of China from 1976-81:

"...Informative, disturbing, poignant and absorbing...personal encounters with individual Chinese that (were) almost unprecedented for any American journalist (at this time this book was written)." - NYT Book Review

Fascinating. I learned that I know less than I ever could have imagined.

This is a true story of a young girl who lived through the Chinese Cultural Revolution in the 1960s when Chairman Mao was in power🇨🇳. It was brutal. “This is the most frightening lesson of the Cultural Revolution: Without a sound legal system, a small group or even a single person can take control of an entire country. This is as true now as it was then.

#bookspin #doublespin @thearomaofbooks

Oh this feels like cheating! Both of these books were holdovers from last months #nonfictionNovember and I finished the #bookspin yesterday, and started the #DoubleSpin last night!

This means I can work on the 4 books I didn't get to earlier in the year.

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! It's nice when everything comes together!! 1y

This is a very good and engrossing book.
But.
It has been a long while since running into the R slur and seeing it a couple of times here it feels visceral. My whole body clenched. Definitely a word that reminds you this was not written recently.
