Two come to mind:

Wuthering Heights and A Tale of Two Cities.

I just didn't appreciate them the first time. Too immature, I guess. I was in high school. I tried again when I was a young mother. Still, no. It was in my mid 40s when I finally understood the appeal.

Butterfinger @BkClubCare I don't think it's scary. It is one of the earliest Gothic atmospheric books. Daphne du Maurier is scarier. She wrote the classic The Birds.
