I loved this book b/c it followed everyday people instead of the “heroes”— a representation of the millions who simply wanted to endure the war & go on with their lives. Werner‘s rise through the Nazi Youth despite not being devoted to their cause reminded me of “Lilac Girls,” where Herta starts as a good person, but slowly crosses line after line until she‘s committing atrocities. #firstbook

Isn't it amazing how our preferences in reading material change over the years? I read this book years ago, before I was really aware of the devil that is consumerism. I must say though, even though it's unlikely I would choose this book today, I devoured it at the time. #badpuns #JubilantJuly #Style

P.S. I can't remember the last time I bought something new clothing-wise. I pop tags at thrift stores now. That's just how I roll.

Litsi I keep this book on my carefully curated shelf as a prime example of a poor book turned into a great movie on the strength of the story and timing, rather than the writing. (edited) 7y

RaimeyGallant @Litsi That's hilarious. I don't think I was a good judge of good versus bad writing back when I read this. I did read it in a day or so, and it was before the movie came out. 7y
