I reread this book because I want to experience again some of the books I‘m donating to a LFL. I remember this story being vaguely horror, more like horror-adjacent. A blurb on the cover describes it as an “eerie and quite lovely coming-of-age tale.” It is not lovely. It can be graphic, at times gross, and also sad. It is still quite a good coming-of-age story, though one plot point resolves a little too neatly and easily.

This is listed as 12.5 in the Pendergast series. In this one, Pendergast tells a nasty little tale of the local New Orleans tooth fairy ⚜️

Tooth Fairy in Training | Michelle Robinson, Briony May Smith
post image

A little fairy named Tate is trained in the proper way to be a Tooth Fairy by her older sister May in this rhyming British picture-book from author Michelle Robinson and illustrator Briony May Smith. This was enjoyable, and I liked the idea of it, but somehow, it didn't strike quite the chord with me, that I hoped it would. Tastes vary of course, so those seeking tooth fairy tales might still want to check it out. The artwork is adorable.

My cousin utilised her covid downtime by digitally drawing this for me. That‘s my 2yo with his favourite book. Written on top is his first full sentence-“Let‘s read a book.” 🥰

I would use this in my classroom because the students engage in stories about fairytales

The story is very age-appropriate and shows what happens when you lose a tooth and how the tooth fairy comes. The book does a good job of illustrating that through the pictures. The pictures are accurate and consistent with the text.
