Pickpick

I started to read ‘Oh, William!‘, from the #ToBlonglist, and it kept referring to a previous novel (the MC, Lucy Barton, is an author) so I decided to read this one first. Luckily it was immediately available on Libby, and I read it in a day.

I love Strout‘s writing, it‘s all the little nuances and feelings that she notices, describes and brings to life. Looking forward to ‘Oh, William!‘

Ruthiella I loved this book. My favorite Strout. 1mo
Caroline2 I‘ve had this in my shelf for agesssss. Sounds like I need to move it up the pile. 👍 1mo

Not much time to read with a new puppy to keep an eye on all of the time….

Finished 2 from the #ToBlonglist that I already had out of the library.

The ongoing are all #ToBshortlist. I was hoping to get out for an #audiowalk today to finish Subdivision, as hubby is not at work, but the weather is meh so that didn‘t happen! Might finish it tomorrow as there is ironing to do. Started The Echo Wife at 5am this morning when pup got up!

Cinfhen How‘s Henry??? Exciting days!!!! 1mo
squirrelbrain He‘s doing well thank you for asking @Cinfhen - he has his moments (usually when he gets tired) but he‘s learning to sit and fetch already and he‘s such a cutie! 1mo

Not a bad reading week - my favourites were the two #ToBshortlist books (Labatut and Garreta), which were both weird and challenging, but compelling.

I liked the Ferris and Caul Baby (#ToBlonglist that I‘d already started before the shortlist) but only soft picks . Same with the Theroux; I hadn‘t read the blurb before listening and it was too pandemic-y for me.

Gratuitous pic of New puppy, Henry, who arrived yesterday. 🐶❤️

Julsmarshall Henry!!! What a sweetie pie! 1mo

Oryx Henry looks as soft as velvet 1mo
tokorowilliamwallace The Labatut sounds good, but probably too close to home to really be able to focus on. What's the To B Shortlist? A litsy quirk or a larger publication literary award? 1mo
squirrelbrain @tokorowilliamwallace - #ToB stands for Tournament of Books; it‘s a US-based knockout competition that you‘ll find online. Some Littens do our own version with the shortlist, to see if we agree with the judges…. You can find more posts on Litsy by searching for the #. 1mo

#BookReport 48/21

This week was all about the #ToBLonglist. I finished these two books and I was deeply impressed by the tagged one. Happy it made the shortlist.
The Other Black Girl has a unique concept but lacked balance in its execution.

Megabooks Seems I need to buy The Trees! 2mo
BarbaraBB I guess so. Be prepared though for the violence and brutality!! 🤍 @Megabooks (edited) 2mo

A pretty good week this week. The top row is in order of favourites, left to right.

I started reading the #ToBlonglist, and mostly read the wrong books 🙄 but I‘m liking (if that‘s the right word) Caul Baby on audio so will finish it this week. Libertie *did* make the shortlist and I‘m really enjoying that.

Cinfhen Yeah, that longlist messed with a lot of us 😘 2mo
Tove_Reads How could Kim Stone be anywhere else than where it is? The best 🥰 2mo
TrishB A great week 👍🏻 2mo

Pickpick

I really don‘t agree with the blurb on this book; it‘s weird and unsettling and exactly what we *don‘t* need in these uncertain times!

Novelist Patrick heads to LA to oversee one of his books turned into a film. However, the world is facing environmental catastrophe and there appears to be something wrong with the WAT-R that everyone now drinks.

A great read, and I can see why it‘s on the #ToBlonglist but the ending was a bit of a let-down.

Cinfhen You‘re making GREAT progress on the #ToBLongList 🙌🏻🎉♥️ 2mo
BarbaraBB What Cindy says. And I adore this cover!! 😍 2mo
Hooked_on_books Keep in mind who the blurb came from—Vandermeer writes some seriously weird stuff! 😂 2mo

Ruthiella Agree with Cindy! You are a reading machine. I‘ve never read Kleeman but want to. If this doesn‘t make the shortlist, I‘ll start with 2mo
Megabooks Kleeman‘s books are weird AF. Her debut gave me nightmares, which is rare for a book, so I‘ll probably pass unless this makes the shortlist. (edited) 2mo
squirrelbrain I‘ve never read any Vandermeer Holly @Hooked_on_books - maybe I won‘t if he‘s a bit weird! 2mo
squirrelbrain Oh dear @Megabooks - that doesn‘t sound good. 😬 This one gave me similar vibes to the tagged book, which I loved, but it wasn‘t as scary (although weirder) because the Hollywood setting gave it some distance from ‘real life‘ whereas I felt the Alam book could really happen. (edited) 2mo
squirrelbrain @Ruthiella - give me a challenge and I can‘t help myself! 🤷‍♀️ That‘s why I‘m trying to do less next year, but not succeeding very well so far! 🤣 2mo
BookLineNSinker The end of this book was definitely my problem with it... There were so many loose ends for my taste. 2w
squirrelbrain Yes, I agree @BudgetingBookwormBabe - it just seemed to tail off towards the end. 2w

Took an #audiowalk to my local library this morning, whilst listening to one #ToBlonglist book (Caul Baby).

Did a spot of weightlifting on the way home as managed to find 6 (mainly hardback!) books from the longlist.

I really should visit the real-life library more often, instead of relying on Libby… I really didn‘t expect to find so many #ToB books. There are a few more too that are currently out on loan so I‘ll need to request those.

Cinfhen Woohoo 🙌🏻 That‘s awesome!!! I MISS going to the library SO MUCH!!!! Happy reading 🤓Keep us posted on your #ToBLongList thoughts 2mo
TrishB Great mornings work 👍🏻 2mo
Caroline2 Oh I saw outlawed on a kindle deal this morning. I‘m umming and ahhing as to whether I‘d like it as it sounds a bit weird?! 🤔 2mo

squirrelbrain Now I‘ve actually got some ‘proper‘ work to do @TrishB - how dare they when I have books to read?! 🤣 2mo
squirrelbrain Depends @Caroline2 …. If it was 99p I‘d just go for it anyway! 🤷‍♀️ 2mo
Crazeedi What's the #ToBLongList? And I'm happy to see Carnegie library in your country!! He did leave a legacy 2mo
squirrelbrain @Crazeedi - apparently there are a lot of Carnegie libraries in the UK. ToB is the Tournament of Books, a kind of knock-out competition for books. It‘s my first year playing along. 2mo
MicheleinPhilly Good Neighbors is TERRIBLE. I‘d put that one at the lowest priority. 2mo
BarbaraBB Gorgeous library and that haul is very attractive too! 2mo
squirrelbrain Oh dear @MicheleinPhilly - I haven‘t heard anything bad about that one before! 😬 At least I should be better at bailing if it‘s a library book rather than one I paid for….. ETA - just looked at yours and @vivastory reviews - oh dear…! (edited) 2mo
vivastory 🤣 I'll be *shocked* if Good Neighbors makes the shortlist. Months later it remains one of the worst I've read this year. 2mo
vivastory That's great you found a lot on the long list! I placed holds on several yesterday. I hope to read the entire shortlist like I did this year 2mo
MicheleinPhilly Scott and I seem to be in the minority. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo
Ruthiella Great haul and good tip about looking into hard copies from the library when the ebooks are either not available or the hold lists too long. 👍 2mo
squirrelbrain I‘m hoping that the books I‘m able to find / read will be on the shortlist @vivastory - with the exception of the dreaded Good Neighbors of course! 🤣 2mo
Megabooks That‘s a great stack! 2mo
