The English Patient | Michael Ondaatje

Pickpick

Supper tonight included soup, salad, and finishing this book. It describes the experiences and memories of four people in an Italian villa just after the retreat of the Germans at the end of WWII. I was saddened yet fascinated by the war time experiences of each character and especially intrigued by the descriptions of dismantling bombs. The writing style took a while for me to adjust to, but I appreciated the vivid detail and literary allusions.

I hope to stay on track with group reads, finish current independent reads, and move on to an upcoming as I finish one of similar format.

jewright I want to know if The English Patient is worth reading. 2w
Daisey @jewright I‘ve just started, but I‘ll be sure to let you know what I think. 2w
Cinfhen Great week and so glad to find a recommendation for Iceland 😁 2w

Cinfhen Ohhhhh, I don‘t want a chunkster 😝 @BarbaraBB thanks for your suggestion 2w
Cinfhen And it‘s a shortie @BarbaraBB !!!!!! 2w
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen definitely 😉 And it is beautiful - as is Independent People by the way! 2w
Daisey @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I'm enjoying Independent People for the most part, but it's just over 20 hours on audio. 2w
Cinfhen I found anything more than 12 hours and I start to get antsy 🤪 2w

Finally, as part of my year end wrap up, here are the 30 books I read from the #1001books list in 2019. It‘s not quite as many as I was hoping for, but I did manage to read my #Reading1001 #TBRTakedown book every month, a few of the books of the month for that group, a few with Litsy readalongs, and a few random choices.

Scochrane26 I would try some of the list or other lists, but there‘s just some books I‘m never going to be willing to read. It‘s a great goal though, & I have worked on more classics. 2w
Cinfhen 🙌🏻❣️#TBRtakedown 😁 2w
Daisey @Scochrane26 Thanks, and I completely understand. I will never get through all of these, and there are some I have no desire to read. I like that it gives me a wide variety of books to read and an interesting group of people with whom to discuss those books. 2w
CafeMom Great graphic. I wish I could do that. 2w
Daisey @CafeMom This is actually just a screenshot of my bookshelf on Goodreads in cover grid format on a square background. I lucked out that I read 30 books and it came out in even rows. 2w

Mehso-so

I listened to this entire #audiobook over the weekend. The writing is descriptive and beautiful, making it easy to visualize the events. I appreciated the message of the story and how it was shared with the reader between the lines of what was actually said by the narrator. However, I like a story with more of a plot, and I‘m not sure this book will stick with me over time.

This was a fun listen. I don‘t tend to read or listen to mysteries very often, but I always enjoy those by Agatha Christie when I do.

Gezemice I think this is her best. 3mo
Tanisha_A I loved this 3mo
Daisey @Gezemice @Tanisha_A I've only listened to this and The Orient Express. I think I liked that one just a little more. I need to read some more! 3mo
RaeLovesToRead I love this book and I didn't realise that Hastings narrates the audiobook - awesome! 3mo

I appreciated this more than any memoir I‘ve listened to for a while, but I think most of that is due to it being more. I could relate to the personal journey through grief, but the details of falconry and the literary aspects were much more interesting to me.

Suet624 I was surprised by all the information about White. 4mo
Daisey @Suet624 I was too, but since I had just listened to The Once and Future King, it was perfect timing. 4mo
ImperfectCJ I finished this book wanting to take up falconry. Luckily for my cat, I haven't followed through. (So far.) 4mo
Daisey @ImperfectCJ I‘ve always thought it sounded interesting and agree this made it sound even more fascinating. 4mo

I checked this #audiobook out to listen to just as I was finishing listening to The Once and Future King. It wasn‘t until I was reading other reviews of that book that I realized the author T.H. White is discussed in this book. It‘s a happy coincidence that I‘m following that audiobook with this one, and it‘s adding to my appreciation of both, although not enough to change my rating of the former.

All the Pretty Horses | Cormac McCarthy
post image
Pickpick

It took me a while to adjust to McCarthy‘s writing style, and for that reason I‘m glad to have been able to immerse myself instead of reading a few pages at a time. This story has a truly stark and western feel to me. The description of the setting and the travel through it is really what made the book for me. As for the plot, it seemed a quest with no real destination.

DGRachel I love McCarthy, but this one is still on my TBR. One of these days I‘ll get to it... 5mo

It‘s taken me a bit to get used to the punctuation (or lack thereof) and style of this book, but I‘m enjoying it now. It absolutely conveys a feeling of the setting. Also, late night reading calls for ice cream.

JazzFeathers Odd style choices on the part of authors are always hard at the beginning. But there is always a pay off when there is a reason for it. 6mo
Liz_M I can think of few occasions that don't call for ice cream. 😁 5mo
Daisey @JazzFeathers I think I may need to read about McCarthy to understand it a bit more. As it was, the lack of punctuation seemed to fit the stark setting. (edited) 5mo
Daisey @Liz_M True! 🍨 5mo
