The message in the 2nd volume in The Spirit of Denendeh graphic novel series is that it‘s never too late for redemption and that the prospect of leaving a legacy to be proud of can carry us forward to a better future. The portrayal of Fort Smith is impressively realistic—it‘s rare to see NWT communities in fiction. Tlicho cultural traditions & beliefs as shown are interesting too. Dynamic art and an inspiring story: I recommend this! #Indigenous

Nice to see this Easter egg: Lacey takes a brave step in her life and she is carrying a copy of Helen Knott‘s memoir, In My Own Moccasins.

Anyanwu and Doro are powerful, immortal, godlike beings who may or may not be human. What a wild, up and down ride with a slow burn satisfying (?) payoff. It was a lot of fun seeing the ways that Anyanwu challenged Doro, and I loved the insight we got into her body-focused powers (which reminded me of the Ooloi from Butler‘s Xenogenesis saga). Used for my before I was born prompt for #RushathonChristmasBingo. #Classic #SciFi #Spirits

I believe this qualifies as a novella, since it‘s less than 100 pages. It‘s actually poems, each in the shape of a diamond 💎

Dene own voices' story of choosing the path of generosity and healing over violence and greed. I will never get tired of stories that take the harder, more hopeful path.

This book has a lot of (often repetitive & overlapping) history to fill in the time period when the cocktail was in fashion. A better read is A History of the World in 6 Glasses, which worked better to show the influence of six specific beverages on Western history and society.

The most helpful chapters are the last 2: A Thumbnail Guide to Rum & When It‘s Cocktail Time. Overall, disappointing. But at least it‘s off my shelf!

Book 4 for #20in4

Accidentally read this one at my desk 🫣😇

After storming off after an argument with her big sister - Willow takes to the woods - where she finds Pilu, a lost tree spirit. In helping Pilu find her way home to her family - Willow has her own realisations about grief (her Mum died), how much she loves her family, the power of friendship & the importance of feeling rather than suppressing your emotions.

The illustrations are gorgeous too!

It took me a while to pick this book up, but once I did, I got into it very quickly, probably because I knew what to expect. The yokai are very well done, several jump scares in broad daylight for me 🤣
