"No hair and no teeth, she's covered in scars. No fingers, no leg-"

Well-done if disturbing & violent. They're 17th Century pirates, what you gonna do?

Based on a historical character; god rest her soul. Those were violent times especially for a Black lesbian woman; yet Jacquotte, she fights, she conquers.

You can count this as an #ownvoices by a queer, disabled author. Check, check if you try to keep track of those things. ?‍❤️‍?‍??‍☠️

Gissy And great picture👌 2w

Have been working my way through this short story collection over the last few weeks. It has stories from some of my favorite queer YA authors. Like most collections, there were some really great stories & some duds but overall I liked the majority of them. The cast of characters was diverse & the genres mostly contemporary, with some sci-fi & magical realism.

This book for me was so-so everything was everywhere in this book one happy scene than it would quickly switch to a intense scene. I'd still read it when I get bored for nostalgic reasons 6/10 for me.

For the people who have read this book you'll understand.

Powerful middle grade. This was a buddy read with my 6th grader. Themes of bereavement, alcohol abuse, homelessness, bullying, and financial insecurity are all heavy topics but portrayed in a way that didn't sugarcoat any of it and will leave young readers to feel "seen" and "understood" but characters that may have similar circumstances to themselves.

I‘m all about a book with an Austin, TX setting - such a fun city. I‘ve been reading some heavy books of late and this one was just fun. You know you‘re in for laughs when in the opening scene the MC is flagrantly cheated on by a cad and her immediate revenge is to befriend not just one but two of said cad‘s other lovers.

ChasingOm I really liked this series! 2mo
marleed @ChasingOm oh I didn‘t realize this was part of a series! 2mo
Suet624 Funny enough, I‘ve done the same thing. My cad had good taste in women 😀 and I‘ve become good friends with several of them. 2mo
marleed @Suet624 oh you are my kind of woman! That‘s the best revenge! 2mo

This is such a tiny little volume that I almost feel like I cheated, but it does contain #ownvoices poetry from the #SolomonIslands. Is it good poetry? I don‘t really know, as I‘m not a poetry reader, but it‘s interesting and gave me a little flavor of what people from there might think about. There are also 2 poems in both pidgin and English, which I really liked.

Librarybelle I don‘t read a lot of poetry either, but this one sounds very interesting with the look at the thoughts of residents. 4mo
squirrelbrain Have you nearly finished this challenge already?! 🤣 4mo
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain Ha! Not even close! But since I don‘t know if we‘ll suddenly get an offer and be moving in a month or two, I want to take advantage of having all the Oceania books at this library system. I won‘t have this kind of access in Oregon! So yeah, I‘m definitely pushing hard on this challenge. 4mo
squirrelbrain Ah yes, good thinking! And I‘m glad you‘re still there so that I got two books too, they‘re really not that easy to find over here. 4mo
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain I thought that might be the case! I‘m really lucky that the library here is so good. The whole state is connected within the system, so most of the books I‘ll be using for this challenge will be from Honolulu. And they just send them over from another island, no fee! It‘s amazing. 4mo

#12DaysofChristmas #May

I fell asleep so this one is a day late.

This is around the time my resolve to review books consistently fell apart as usual.

I love this one. Ana Castillo‘s writing is beautiful and poetic. Carmen, despite having polio as a child, is a renowned flamenco dancer in Chicago. I love reading about Carmen, her passionate love affairs, her relationship with her family, and her strength.

Bookzombie These two books, tagged, were strong contenders for May also. 4mo
Andrew65 Yes, the same month my records fell apart, have a had to spend a couple of intense days getting them back on track this week. 4mo

Bookzombie @Reggie 🙂 You recommended it to me. 4mo
Bookzombie @Andrew65 That sounds like no fun. Sometimes I don‘t track all month and catching up for one month alone is a pain. 4mo
Andrew65 @Bookzombie Had 6 1/2 months to catch up on 🫣😱 But now back on track! I must not let it happen again 😂 4mo
Bookzombie @Andrew65 That is a lot, lol. 4mo
