pickThis was really intriguing. Having recently lived through my own Cat 5 Hurricane (Ian), I was really interested in this. The devastation in Nola, was on another level than what we experience in Fort Myers, but I can relate to the panic, PTSD, terror, etc. a very captivating story
Ruffin is a writing prof and I felt that at times while reading, in the most interesting of ways. It is perfectly plotted to reflect the many ways in which a Black woman could make her way through the antebellum south. We follow Ady as she is enslaved, from the house to the fields, from escape to touch freedom, interacting with free people of color in New Orleans, and beyond. There is a depth of experience here; a novel to be felt and studied.

pickQuarter to Midnight showcases the pulsating, vibrant city of New Orleans while it meticulously unravels a fraudulent scheme, laced with duplicity and cruelty, that started back in Hurricane Katrina. Karen Rose at her best with corruption and murder, well-developed characters, and a sweet romance. The story is fast paced and on the edge of your seat exciting. Quarter to Midnight the first in the New Orleans series leaves the reader wanting more.

This was such a lovely adventure. It reminded me of the Phantom Tollbooth mixed with the Starless Sea. Definitely one to reread and get more out of each time.
