What an amazing memoir. I loved this

Roy has a complicated relationship with especially her mother, but also her father. A lot of the memoir focuses on this through the ages.

But she also spent time on her school years, film making career and relationships, and as a book lover how much winning the Booker Prize back in 1997 changed her life for ever.

I know it‘s early but I hope to this on next year‘s Women‘s Prize for Nonfiction.

AnneCecilie Now I want to read more of her works and reread 3d
ChaoticMissAdventures That is such a great photo of her. She is so cool. 3d
TheBookHippie It‘s on my list!! 3d
Suet624 It's in my stack of books to be read as part of TenBeforetheEnd but now that I'm reading The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny I'll be lucky to get to it before the end of December. :( 3d
squirrelbrain I loved this too! And you‘re so right - it should be on the #wpnf list next year. 3d

“Women's lives are shaped by sexism and expectations. Disabled people's lives are shaped by ableism and a complete lack of expectations. But what happens when you're subjected to both sets of rules?“

A memoir from journalist & advocate for people with disabilities, Lucy Webster, which examines how sexism & ableism are intertwined when it comes to disabled women. From dealing with education, finding work, & trying out dating, (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf the experiences of disabled women are often not thought of, let alone considered.

Webster brought up some aspects that I had never even considered such as the barriers disabled women face when attempting to access basic healthcare such as smear tests as many GP surgeries do not have hoists as standard. Or the military-grade planning it takes just to be able to have a night out with so few fully accessible transport options, & where pubs market

OutsmartYourShelf themselves as accessible but fail to provide a ramp to negate the presence of a doorstep. Or where shops use accessible changing rooms to store old mannequins. All in all, it made me think that as a society we really pay lip service to disability access. There's so much more that could be done.

There are times when it feels more like you're reading an academic article than a memoir but given the author's job, it's no surprise.

OutsmartYourShelf It's definitely worth a read if you want to understand just how deep ableism still runs in modern society. 4🌟

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, DK RED, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

I must admit that as someone who has showed up to an event with Roy and had my book signed by her, I love that she enjoys meeting her readers

Finding My Way: A Memoir | Malala Yousafzai

All before college Malala became famous, won the Nobel Peace Prize, interacted with world leaders. This memoir is about how the shooting, the hatred toward her and the fame from her situation affected her emotionally as she was still coming in to her own. She had huge expectations imposed on her long before her brain was completely developed. She truly is an amazing person who has improved countless girls' lives all over the world.

ChaoticMissAdventures I have been seeing her do the talk circuit, and I find her very funny, curious if that translates to her book also? It is all such serious topics. 1w
underground_bks @ChaoticMissAdventures it‘s really funny actually! Her first college crush is sending me rn 1w

Excellent memoir that I flew through. Despite good intentions and repeat library checkouts, I've never read any of Macy's previous books. I especially still want to after listening to this because her writing and storytelling totally worked for me. A highly recommended but very non-escapist read for right now in the U.S.

JenReadsAlot Dopesick was fantastic! 3w
